Alistair Overeem issues first statement on Las Vegas battery charge on woman

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight number one contender Alistair Overeem, who must appear in court next month to answer for charges of misdemeanor battery, has issued a statement regarding his case through his attorney, David Chesnoff, of the Chesnoff & Schonfeld law firm in Las Vegas, Nevada.

That's where "Demolition Man" was accused of making contact with a woman at the Wynn casino, causing her to "stagger back" in a report issued earlier today.

Overeem was not arrested, rather issued a citation that will call for him appear on Feb. 21, 2012, where his attorney plans to "vigorously defend" his client's innocence.

Those comments, after the jump.

"I have advised Alistair not to comment on this matter, and that we will do our talking in the court. It should be noted that Alistair was not arrested; he was summoned to court. There are two sides to this story, and we intend on vigorously defending this as Alistair maintains his innocence."

As we stated earlier, Overeem is innocent until proven guilty.

"The Reem" was on location as the headliner for UFC 141: "Lesnar vs. Overeem," where he stopped former division champion Brock Lesnar via first round technical knockout.

The UFC has yet to comment on today's report but as always, keep it locked into MMAmania.com for more details on this developing story as they become available.

UFC Quick Quote: Fabricio Werdum will use speed to defeat ‘fatty’ Roy Nelson

Posted in Uncategorized on January 31st, 2012 by Geno Mrosko
Pictured: Fabricio Werdum.

"I can tell you that he'll need to keep his hands up, because a knockout might happen. He'll need to keep his hands way up, in high guard. I think I'll hit his legs a lot. Roy Nelson is very tough and can endure a lot of beating, he showed that against [Junior dos Santos], but there's always a weak spot. I'll try to look for that flaw during the fight. I think I will win with agility and mobility. I am well mentally, as well as physically, much faster and this will be determinant in this fight, due to the fact that he's slower, a fatty. It will be a very strategic fight. It's my return to the UFC, it will be very important to me. When I have the opportunity to KO or submit, I will do it. I don't like to win by points, it happens sometimes, but my prevision is this: knockout or submission. The main thing is the victory."

-- Fabricio Werdum, the guy who beat Fedor Emelianenko when beating Fedor was still cool, is finally back in the UFC after over three years away fighting in Strikeforce. He was successful over there, too, winning three of four fights. Now, he's back where he belongs and tells Globo (translation via Bloody Elbow) that he's going to use his agility, mobility and superior speed to defeat Roy Nelson, whom he will take on at UFC 143 this Sat., Feb. 4, 2012, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. He'll be able to do all this, you see, because "Big Country" is a "fatty." Don't get him wrong, Werdum knows Nelson is as tough as they come -- sustaining a 15-minute beating at the hands of Junior dos Santos without crumbling can attest to that -- but he has areas of weakness "Vai Cavalo" plans to exploit. Anyone think Werdum is underestimating his opponent here?

Ryo Chonan says Fedor Emelianenko did not give Satoshi Ishii brain damage

Fedor Emelianenko gets blamed for a lot of bad things.

Aside from leading to the demise of just about every mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion he's ever competed in, the former WAMMA-jamma was also singled out as a bus-hogging diva in Japan.

Now he's accused of giving Satoshi Ishii brain damage.

Japanese weekly publication Cyzo claimed doctors told the former Olympian he suffered a "cerebral edema" in his fight against "The Last Emperor" at the "Genki Desu Ka Omisoka" year-end MMA extravaganza last month in "The Land of the Rising Sun."

Ishii's friend and training partner Ryo Chonan says (via The Garv) "Satoshi Ishii is just fine" and that "the people who spread these false rumors about other people's lives and livelihoods should just die."

As of now, we can confirm that Emelianenko hits hard -- but not hard enough to cause brain damage.

That's probably good news for his next mystery opponent, who will meet the former PRIDE FC champ this summer somewhere in Europe or Japan.

Stay tuned.

MFC releases Antonio McKee and Brian Cobb, James Haddad also cut for missing weight

The Maximum Fighting Championship has released Antonio McKee, Brian Cobb, and James Haddad from their contracts with the organization.

McKee and Cobb were both slated to compete for the MFC lightweight title at MFC 32: Bitter Rivals on Jan. 27, but both fighters came in over the contract weight at the official weigh-in - defending champ McKee by seven pounds and challenger Cobb by one-half pound.

"I was thoroughly disgusted by the lack of professionalism that Antonio McKee showed towards the belt he was scheduled to defend as well as the Maximum Fighting Championship as a organization," said MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich.

"It was unacceptable behavior for a champion to demonstrate. On top of that, Antonio never really apologized for missing weight that badly. That was the end of things for him with the MFC. That's why he was stripped of his belt immediately and told that he would never fight in the MFC again. I hope it's a message to all the other fighters in the MFC."

Cobb, who was coming off a win over Drew Fickett at MFC 30, lost a narrow decision to McKee at MFC 32.

"It's disappointing to have to release Brian as he is a tremendous character person," added Pavelich. "Everyone in the MFC has a great deal of respect and admiration for Brian, but unfortunately he admitted to making an error in preparing for the weigh-in and was over the limit. For a title fight that is a big mistake."

Haddad, who lost via decision to Dan Ring at MFC 32, was over by two pounds for his lightweight bout.

Video: Mike Tyson comments on possible MMA fight

Posted in Uncategorized on January 31st, 2012 by Jesse Holland

"It would be interesting to get in there, I think. Imagine being in a fight with somebody and the only thing you can do is box them and if his hands are superior to yours, then what? You're dead meat, basically. So why not grab somebody and throw them down and put 'em in a headlock? I don't know. That'd be pretty interesting."

Inside MMA catches up with former boxing great "Iron" Mike Tyson, who terrorized the "sweet science" in the mid-to-late eighties before his personal and professional collapse. While the "Dynamite Kid" is far removed from his days of making any kind of impact inside the squared circle or the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), it shouldn't stop us from speculating what kind of mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter he could have become had the UFC been around 20 years ago -- and been able to pay him 17 billion dollars per fight.

UFC 143: Georges St. Pierre explains his hatred for ‘crazy’ Nick Diaz

Posted in Uncategorized on January 31st, 2012 by Jesse Holland
Photo of Georges St. Pierre courtesy of Toronto Sun.

Angry champ is angry.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 170-pound kingpin Georges St. Pierre will be watching the UFC 143 welterweight Interim title fight between Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit this weekend with vested interest.

And not just because he fights the winner later this year.

St. Pierre wants Diaz to win -- at any and all costs. That way, he can get payback for the months of torment the outspoken Stockton slugger has put him though since they were originally booked to throw hands at UFC 137 last October.

Hear "Rush" explain his "professional hatred" for Diaz (via UFC.com) after the jump.

"I am very nervous that Carlos Condit will win on Saturday night, and that I won't be able to fight Nick Diaz this summer. I feel bad, it is weird that I want him to lose, but I have never wanted to fight anyone as much as I want to fight Diaz. I don't truly hate him as a person. I don't know that he is a bad guy, but I hate what he brings to the sport with the disrespect and the unprofessional things he says and does. It is sort of a professional hatred. He has been nothing but disrespectful and arrogant towards me. During UFC 137 (week) I felt like I had to walk around Las Vegas with my fists ready (to punch Diaz) because every time I came across him he wanted to fight there and then. Every time the elevator opened (in the hotel) I needed to be ready to fight in case he stepped in. I was on edge all week. This guy is crazy. I am used to hearing (smack) talk from opponents, Matt Serra did it, Dan Hardy did it, and Josh Koscheck did it, but with Diaz he has taken it to another level. He and his coach (Cesar Gracie) have called me a coward and tried to disrespect my accomplishments. All that has done though is make me determined to beat him up. He will bring out the best in me, I will be 100% focused, like a bomb-expert defusing a time bomb. When my back is against the wall and I have no choice but to win, when I cannot lose to this person under any cost, that is when I am most dangerous."

St. Pierre was paired off with Diaz on two separate occasions, but a myriad of shenanigans on the part of the 209 bad boy, coupled with the Canadian's brittle knees, forced both pay-per-view (PPV) headliners to be scrapped in favor of opposite bookings.

Now, with Diaz and Condit set to establish a true division number one contender at the Mandalay Bay Events Center this Saturday night (Feb. 4) for the UFC 143 supershow in Las Vegas, Nevada, St. Pierre can zero in on his next opponent.

But will fighting angry cost him against Diaz? Or not fighting angry enough put him at a disadvantage if he fights "The Natural Born Killer?" There is no question that Nick Diaz is inside GSP's head.

How will it affect him when he finally returns to the Octagon?

Brittney Palmer and Arianny Celeste two of AskMen.com’s Top 99 Women of 2012

Posted in Uncategorized on January 31st, 2012 by Jesse Holland
Brittney Palmer comes in ahead of Arianny Celeste in AskMen.com's list of Top 99 Women of 2012.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Octagon Girls Brittney Palmer and Arianny Celeste have made AskMen.com's list of "Top 99 Women" for 2012. The popular website for men "scoured the globe" to find the "most desirable women" who "aren't just the next pretty faces" but "smart, strong women who offer the complete package."

Brittney Palmer came in at number 40 because:

MMA is the fastest-growing sport in North America, and along with it comes an explosion of ring girls. Even during boxing's zenith, fans didn't know ring card models by name. Brittney Palmer and her UFC contemporaries have changed that. Charismatic, even when just strutting around the Octagon, Palmer looks like a classic pin-up model with girl-next-door charm. An artist by training, Palmer's free spirit in interviews immediately caught MMA fans' attention and taught them to love instead of just crave blood. What? Too much? No, seriously, she's that hot.

Where did Arianny Celeste place? Find out after the jump.

Askmen-2_medium

Arianny Celeste is number 68 because:

You could point to a lot of reasons for why UFC has taken off as one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. But as far as we're concerned, there's only one: Arianny Celeste. The popular Octagon Girl has appeared in Maxim, Sports Illustrated and on the cover of Playboy, making her one of MMA's most recognizable faces. And now that Celeste's as much of a pay-per-view draw (if not more) as many of the sport's biggest stars, we're betting this knockout ring girl could turn even Gandhi into a UFC fan.

What say you? Should these lovely ladies have been placed higher or lower?

UFC on FOX 3: Tony Ferguson vs Dennis Hallman booked for May 5 in New Jersey

Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 13 winner Tony Ferguson looks to continue his undefeated run through the UFC lightweight division when he makes a trip to the "Garden State" later this year to battle longtime veteran Dennis Hallman at the UFC on Fox 3 event booked for May 5, 2012, from the IZOD Center in East Rutherford.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) officials announced the bout late last night.

Ferguson (13-3) graduated at the top of his TUF class by beating the brakes off fellow finalist Ramsey Nijem. That set up a jaw-breaking win over Aaron Riley followed by a unanimous decision victory over the venerable Yves Edwards.

Can "El Cucuy" scare up another "W" in Dirty Jersey?

Standing in his way will be Hallman (51-14-2), who ruffled a few feathers in his 2011 fight campaign.

"Superman" was kicked out of the welterweight division by Brian Ebersole in a bout that saw him unveil the dreaded banana hammock. He returned to the Octagon as a lightweight opposite John Makdessi, but struggled in his attempt to make weight, marring his dominating win over the previously undefeated "Bull."

Could a loss to Ferguson earn him his walking papers?

UFC on FOX 3 will be headlined by a lightweight fight featuring Jim Miller vs. Nate Diaz. The victor is widely-expected to move on to face the winner of Frankie Edgar vs. Ben Henderson, who compete next month at UFC 144 in Japan.

Report: Alistair Overeem charged with misdemeanor battery in Las Vegas

Sounds like Brock Lesnar wasn't the only opponent Alistair Overeem may have faced over the New Year's Eve weekend.

A report today from Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal brings word that "Demolition Man" blew up on a casino patron in "Sin City," allegedly making physical contact with her. He was not arrested at the scene but later issued a citation and must appear in court to answer these charges on Feb. 21, 2012.

If convicted, "The Reem" could face a steep monetary fine and up to half a year in the clink.

Of course it's imperative we remember that Overeem is innocent until proven guilty. As of now, details are sketchy and team Reem has vehemently denied the accusation. No statement has been released from Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he currently competes in the heavyweight division.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more details on this developing story as they become available.

Beermania: UFC 143 edition

Posted in Uncategorized on January 31st, 2012 by ShivanTiger

Beermania_medium_medium

Welcome to the UFC 143: "Diaz vs Condit" edition of MMAmania.com presents "Beermania."

The plan is to rate and review two different styles of beer prior to each UFC pay-per-view (PPV) fight card, with one brand representing each of the two main event fighters. For this edition, I will present a beer from California (Nick Diaz) and a beer from New Mexico (Carlos Condit).

As always, I have done my best to use beers that are of the same style and represent the fighter's home country (or state) for each post. With any luck, I can convince some you to try out a beer you normally wouldn't have sampled at the local watering hole. Also for this episode, we will be introducing a segment I like to call "Chocolate Silk's Cooking Corner," where everybody's favorite Mania foodie, Old Man Ulf Murphy, will give us some recipes that should compliment the style of beer being reviewed.

Here's how it works.

When reviewing a beer, there are typically five categories of concern: Appearance (A), Smell (S), Taste (T), Mouthfeel (M), and Drinkability (D). After a brief description for each category, based on my tasting notes, I will assign a letter grade to each beer.

Follow me after the jump to get started.

First up, fighting out of the blue corner, representing Nick Diaz and brewed out of Orange County, California, we have The Bruery Orchard White.

425780_2804951195210_1001535911_32293906_1039961468_n_medium

Tale of the tape:

Beer: The Bruery Orchard White.
Brewery: The Bruery, Orange County, California.
Serving size: 750ml bottle poured into a 13oz Saison Dupont glass, 5.7 alcohol percent by volume.

From the Brewery:

Our unparalleled California White Ale offers flavors of fresh citrus, bready wheat and a hint of lavender. Enjoy!

ShivanTiger's Review:

A: Golden in color, slight cloudiness, big white head that doesn't want to leave the glass, a thick lacing after a glass swirl.
S: Very subtle nose, notes of wheat, a bit of lemon zest and just a hint of pepper, some lavender as it warms.
T: Similar to the smell, picking up lemon zest, some spicing from what appears to be peppercorns, and a bit of herbal flavors possible from the hops.
M: Very thin mouthfeel, nice carbonation.
D: Easy drinker, while the spicing is mild, I can see how some people could be turned off by it. Good beer for a hot summer day, maybe mix it with some OJ for a Sunday morning beermosa.

Overall: B

It's not the best Wit I've had, but I wouldn't turn it down on a hot day.

Next up, fighting out of the Red Corner, representing Carlos Condit and brewed out of Pecos, New Mexico, we have Abbey of Christ in the Desert Monk's Wit.

431098_2805259442916_1001535911_32293954_1823541720_n_medium

Tale of the tape:

Beer: Abbey of Christ in the Desert Monk's Wit.
Brewery: Abbey Beverage Company Pecos, New Mexico.
Serving Type: 12 oz bottle poured into a 13 oz Saison Dupont glass. Unknown alcohol by volume.

From the Brewery:

For centuries monks throughout Europe have been recognized for crafting some of the world's finest beer. The Benedictine monks of New Mexico bring these same venerable traditions to Monk's Wit - a light refreshing Belgian-style wheat ale brewed with spices that endear you with a heavenly taste.

ShivanTiger's Review:

A: Very light straw color, not cloudy at all, appears more like a pilsner. Very thin head, leaving way to thin lacing.
S: Very mild smells, only thing I am picking up is slight wheat notes, nothing off-putting, but certainly not appealing.
T: Much like the smell this has little to no flavor, I do get a slight bit of what seems to be corn syrup.
M: Very thin, watery, not a lot of carbonation.
D: Yes it is easy to drink, but that's due to the fact it doesn't have much flavor.

Overall: D

It's time for the Monks to enroll in brewing school. This is not a Witbier, regardless of what the label says. It looks like a pilsner, tastes like Coors Light's older hipster brother. I am extremely unhappy that I am stuck with five more of these. Maybe I'll use it to make some beer boiled hotdogs.

Additional Witbier Tasting Notes:

It's a Belgian-style ale that's very pale and cloudy in appearance due to it being unfiltered and the high level of wheat, and sometimes oats, that's used in the mash. Always spiced, generally with coriander, orange peel and other oddball spices or herbs in the background. The crispness and slight twang comes from the wheat and the lively level of carbonation. This is one style that many brewers in the US have taken a liking to and have done a very good job of staying to style. Sometimes served with a lemon, but if you truly want to enjoy the untainted subtleties of this style you'll ask for yours without one. Often referred to as "white beers" (witbieren) due to the cloudiness and yeast in suspension.

Some other examples of the Witbier style would include:

Hoegaarden Original White Ale (Brouwerij van Hoegaarden)
Blue Moon Belgian White (Coor's Brewing Company)
Allagash White (Allagash Brewing Company)
Samuel Adams White Ale (Boston Beer Company)
Blanche de Chambly (Unibroue)

Witbiers should be enjoyed in a pint glass, pilsner glass, or mug at 45 - 50 degrees Farenheit.

Chocolate Silk's Cooking Corner, featuring Ulf Murphy

California Spinach Salad:

1/2 cup pomegranate juice
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons dijon mustard
Salt and ground black pepper
6 cups baby spinach leaves
1/3 cup dried cranberries
1/3 cup walnut pieces
1/3 cup feta or bleu cheese (user preference)

Mix dressing ingredients one hour before hand and season to taste.

Grilled, Marinated Zucchini and Squash:

1 zucchini
1 yellow squash
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 clove garlic (some use more)
Sprig of fresh rosemary

Cut into 1/4" slices, chop garlic and rosemary extra fine and marinate for at least 30 minutes.

Cedar Plank Salmon:

1 cedar plank (6 by 14 inches)
2 salmon fillets (1 1/2 pounds total)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 tablespoons Dijon mustard
6 tablespoons brown sugar

Soak plank in saltwater for two hours prior. Remove skin from salmon filets and place "skin side" on plank. Rub Dijon and sprinkle dry brown sugar over it. Indirect grill for 25 minutes on medium to medium high heat, spritzing with water if plank catches on fire.

Good food, good beer and good fights. What else can you ask for?

That does it for this edition, Maniacs.

Be sure to check us out in advance of UFC 144: "Edgar vs Henderson" for another go-round. In the meantime, keep an eye out for special "Beermania Pregame" posts leading into UFC on Fuel TV, UFC on FX, and UFC on Fox events.

And remember to stay up to speed on all the UFC 143 news and notes right here.

ONE Fighting Championship held its eagerly anticipated press conference in Singapore this morning (Jan. 31, 2012) and the big news was that the March 31 card at the Singapore Indoor Stadium would be headlined by a fight between Renato Sobral and Melvin Manhoef.

The co-main event will see Kevin Belingon put his undefeated record on the line against Japanese veteran Masakazu Imanari. The Filipino is undefeated (9-0) in professional mixed martial arts (MMA), competing against good-level opponents outside of the Philippines, but he has never faced anyone of the caliber or experience of "The Master of Leglocks" who has fought 36 times in his 12-year career.

Also on the card will be Eduard Folayang, Zorobabel Moreira, Eddie Ng and a female Singaporean fighter called Nicole Chua, who will make her MMA debut. Their opponents will be revealed at a later date, but the Singapore card already looks set to be the best yet by ONE FC.

Yesterday it was announced that ONE FC had signed a 10-year partnership with ESPN Star Sports (full story here) and some more details about that deal were revealed today. ONE FC will be shown on ESPN Star Sports, which is available in 24 Asian countries and is home to the English Premier League, NBA and MLB, for the next 10 years on a delayed broadcast to begin with, but eventually live.

It appears ONE FC also has official backing from the Singapore Tourism Board and the Economic Development Board. Singapore is ranked by the International Monetary Fund as the third richest country in the world, which bodes well for the financial future of Asia's most prestigious MMA promotion.

The signing of Sobral was announced late last year and he is also set to fight on ONE FC's Manila card which is likely to take place in around six months time. He has won six out of his last eight fights but will not be in for an easy night at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on March 31st.

Manhoef is the current It's Showtime 85 kgs Max World Champion and just went three rounds in a heavyweight K-1 rules fight with Tyrone Spong who is ranked as one of the best stand up fighters in the world. The Dutchman's striking is as good as any MMA fighter in the 205 lbs division (where this fight will presumably take place) and he will be real threat to Babalu.

The last event at the Singapore Indoor Stadium attracted a crowd of 7,000 and the March 31st show should bring in an even bigger attendance because Eduard Folayang is a big draw for Asian fight fans and there will also be a lot of local interest in the Evolve MMA fighters, Eddie Ng and Zorobabel Moreira as well as the female debutant, Nicole Chua.

Putting on a card of this calibre demonstrates CEO / Owner Victor Cui's determination to compete for the signatures of the best fighters in the world as well as continuing to showcase local fighters like Folayang, Belingon and Ng. With a ten year TV deal, support from the Singapore government and a rapidly expanding roster of fighters the future looks bright for both ONE FC and Asian MMA.

HDNet to sponsor 4 live 3D UFC PPV events in 2012

Posted in press release, sponsorships on January 31st, 2012 by Jason Cruz

Las Vegas, Nevada – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® and Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp. (NASDAQ:CIDM) announced today that HDNet will be the official sponsor of four, live 3D theatrical broadcasts of UFC® Pay-Per-View events in 2012 at nearly 75 Cinedigm affiliated theatres.

Beginning with the live 3D broadcast of UFC® 143: DIAZ vs. CONDIT on Saturday, Feb. 4, HDNet will be the featured sponsor, giving the network increased exposure for its MMA programming including promotion of Inside MMA.

In addition, HDNet personalities Kenny Rice and Bas Rutten will have a noticeable presence during 30-minute countdown shows that air in those theatres prior to the live broadcast of UFC Pay-Per-View events.

This news comes on the heels of UFC and Cinedigm announcing late last year the plan to bring the fastest-growing sport in the world to Cinedigm’s affiliated 3D theatres across the country, which include such circuits as Carmike Cinemas, Rave Motion Pictures, Kirkorian Theatres, UltraStar Cinemas and Galaxy Theatres.

“We’re giving fans the chance to watch UFC like never before – live and in 3D,” UFC President Dana White said. “We’re excited that HDNet will be the official sponsor of these 3D events with Cinedigm. It’s going to be a big year for the UFC and we can’t wait to give our fans the chance to see Pay-Per-View events live in theatres in 3D.”

“HDNet has always been the go to source for MMA fans – from fights to news – and partnering with UFC and Cinedigm on 3D is a natural fit to HDNet’s ongoing commitment to MMA,” HDNet Fights CEO Andrew Simon said. “This sponsorship is just one of many new, exciting, and cutting edge additions to HDNet and Inside MMA in 2012, from a brand new studio to more live events, exclusive highlights and on-site UFC coverage.”

The first 3D theatrical presentation, UFC® 143: DIAZ vs. CONDIT, airs live on Pay-Per-View from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. In the night’s main event, the fiery and unpredictable Nick Diaz battles knockout artist Carlos Condit for the interim UFC welterweight title. Plus, heavyweights Roy “Big Country” Nelson and Fabricio Werdum collide, while welterweight bad boy Josh Koscheck meets powerhouse wrestler Mike Pierce.

UFC Quick Quote: Jon Jones wanted to fight at heavyweight in 2012, Dana White said no

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones hopes to fight in the heavyweight division someday, but it won't be in 2012. Photo by Esther Lin.

"I think you know, i figured beating Henderson and Rashad, there would be a period of trying to figure out who I would fight next, and during that period, at the end of 2012, I requested to fight a top 10 heavyweight just for the fans. But Dana and Lorenzo did not think that was the best thing for me to do right now, they wanted me to continue in the light heavyweight division.

-- If you dreamed of seeing Jon Jones fight at heavyweight, keep dreaming. That's because the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion today (Jan. 30, 2012) revealed on The MMA Hour that his request to fight in the promotion's heavyweight division against a top-ranked opponent -- in what he described a "fight for the fans" -- has been shot down by UFC President Dana White and company CEO Lorenzo Fertitta. Jones, who has ransacked through the 205-pound division with relative ease, would be a natural fit with the big boys of the UFC, given the fact that he stands at 6' 4" and usually towers and outweighs his light heavyweight counterparts come fight night. Perhaps some other time, seeing as how White and Fertitta aren't to keen on the idea of their 205-pound champion stepping up in weight class, at least not at the moment. Of course, before "Bones" can even think about jumping in weight, there is still a matter of defending his title against his bitter rival Rashad Evans, which is scheduled to go down at UFC 145 in Atlanta, Ga., on April 21, 2012. Should he be successful, Dan Henderson is expected to be his next opponent. Disappointed at the news that UFC officials axed Jones' request to mix it up at heavyweight? How would he fair against bigger opponents?

Prepare your meanest mugs, Maniacs, because it's about to get real street up in here.

Returning the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, which has served Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) so well over the years, the mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion is poised to deliver another pay-per-view (PPV) event after two free weeks of combat sports action.

With 170-pound champion Georges St. Pierre on the sidelines recovering from major surgery to repair a torn ACL, former Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz and former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) champion Carlos Condit will go toe-to-toe for the interim welterweight title in the UFC 143 main event.

It's teed up to be a fantastic scrap.

In addition, Roy Nelson will welcome Fabricio Werdum back to the Octagon in a clash of two of the best grapplers in the heavyweight division, while Scott Jorgensen will look to quell the rise of the man with the longest unbeaten streak in MMA, Renan Barao.

Before all that, however, we have a solid set of "Prelims" bouts on the under card, which is filled to the brim with entertaining prospects and hard-hitting veterans.

Join us after the jump for part one of our UFC 143 "Prelims" breakdown, including the two fights that will be shown on Facebook -- Daniel Stittgen vs. Stephen Thompson and Rafael Natal vs. Michael Kuiper -- and the one the will start the FX portion of the telecast (Chris Cope vs. Matt Brown)

170 lbs.: Chris Cope vs. Matt Brown

An amateur kickboxing veteran, Chris Cope (5-2) was selected as the fifth member of Team dos Santos on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 13. He went on to score two impressive upset victories before being knocked out by eventual finalist Ramsey Nijem. Undeterred, he was paired up against Chuck O’Neil on the show’s Finale, scoring a dominant decision in an all-stand up affair. Unfortunately, Che Mills refused to let his long-sought UFC opportunity slip through his fingers, and he absolutely dusted Cope in 40 seconds.

With his back against the wall, "C-Murder" will need to get his C-Murdering on in short order if he wants to remain a member of the stacked UFC welterweight division.

Muay Thai menace Matt Brown (12-11) looked to be doing alright against TUF alum Seth Baczynski back at UFC 139, going blow-for-blow with the well-rounded vet all through round one. An ill-advised takedown attempt in the early going of the second, however, left "Immortal" caught in a guillotine, forcing him to tap four the fourth time in five fights, all in the second round. While Dana White has expressed an immense liking for the hard-hitting striker, there’s only so far an exciting style can take you, and at 1-4 with four submission losses in five fights, this could be "The Immortal’s" last stand in the UFC if he can’t put away Cope.

I don’t know if he doesn’t train it enough or if it’s just something he’s not good at, but Brown’s submission defense is absolutely atrocious. He’s been submitted a whopping nine times, and while he’s certainly effective on his feet, that effectiveness pretty much ensures nobody’s going to play that game with him.

Luckily, Cope will, because it’s the only one he knows how to play.

While he definitely shouldn’t be falling by submission this often, the people who make Brown tap are at least legitimate submission threats, which Cope isn’t. He can strike and has the takedown defense to make people strike with him, but he doesn’t have a Plan B for someone capable of thrashing him in the stand up department. Mills did it and Brown is going to do it, too. "The Immortal" will live to fight another day, crushing Cope in the early going with punches.

Prediction: Brown by first round technical knockout

170 lbs.: Dan Stittgen vs. Stephen Thompson

Submissions expert Dan Stittgen (7-1) is not one to waste time. His recent victory over Mark Stoddard was not only the first bout in his brief career to go the distance, but the first one to go past the first round. The grappling prowess of "The Anvil" has been instrumental in all seven of his wins, which include five subs and a technical knockout stoppage from ground-and-pound. Replacing Justin Edwards against the kickboxing prodigy Thompson, Stittgen has a tall task ahead of him, but could send one hell of a message to the rest of the division by pulling off another quick submission.

Stephen Thompson (5-0) has been kickboxing since he was three, and his resume in the sport reads like the biography of a Jean-Claude Van Damme character. A champion in an obscene amount of stand up organizations, "Wonderboy" switched to MMA in 2010 and has gone unbeaten in the sport. Thompson replaces Mike Stumpf and -- as one of the most decorated kickboxers to ever enter the UFC -- has some high expectations to fulfill against fellow late replacement Stittgen.

There’s always a question with high-level kickboxers of not only their ability to stay on their feet, but their ability to maintain an effective offense despite the threat of a takedown. Cosmo Alexandre, one of the top 155-pound kickboxers in the world, was outstruck in his MMA debut by an opponent who kept him stifled with the threat of a takedown.

Judging by his credentials, though, "Wonderboy" has that covered. He’s a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Carlos Machado, his brother-in-law, and has proven himself more than competent on the ground. Neither he nor Stittgen have faced high-quality MMA competition (aside from Stittgen’s guillotine loss to Justin Edwards), so there’s no telling how that black belt will hold up against top-tier grapplers, but it should be enough here. Stittgen has solid submissions, but Thompson has experience in deeper waters and a striking game the likes of which you’re not likely to find anywhere outside the elite of the division. He’ll catch Stittgen with something nasty after shutting down the latter’s grappling offense.

Prediction: Thompson via third round knockout

185 lbs.: Rafael Natal vs. Michael Kuiper

A grappling specialist out of Gracie Fusion, Rafael Natal (13-3-1) finally notched his first UFC victory at UFC 133, defeating wrestling specialist Paul Bradley by decision. "Sapo," now 1-1-1, had previously fallen to Rich Attonito and drawn with Jesse Bongfelt under the ZUFFA banner, and owns victories over Danilo Villefort and Travis Lutter in other organizations. Against Kuiper -- one of the most lauded European prospects on the map -- he’ll be out to prove he’s more than just a barometer for new talent.

A black belt in his eponymous martial art, "Judo" Michael Kuiper (11-0) has been carving a path of destruction through the European circuit, finishing all but one of his foes in the first or second round. In addition to his excellent grappling pedigree, Kuiper has displayed some serious pop in his hands, knocking out five of his last six opponents with punches. He’ll need to utilize his entire game to make a dent in the vicious middleweight division, starting with the experienced "Sapo."

I’m always skeptical about undefeated prospects, especially ones who, like Kuiper, have primarily fed on inferior competition. What makes me lean toward him anyway in this case is twofold: He actually has experience fighting in a cage and Natal isn’t all that great. Kuiper’s striking isn’t the cleanest, but he has legitimate power in his hands and, by the looks of things, the takedown defense necessary to use them. He could be in trouble if Natal drags him into deep water with a wrestling attack, but if Kuiper can stay on his feet, he’ll put away Natal. It is my firm belief that he can do so in the early going.

Prediction: Kuiper via first round technical knockout

That's it for now. Stop by tomorrow for a look at the remaining bouts comprising the remaining FX "Prelims," featuring the likes of Dustin Poirier, Matt Riddle and Alex Caceres, among others.

See you then!
