MMAterial Facts 07/22/10: Dave Herman, Zac Gearge Involved in Contract Disputes

Herman, Bellator Locked in Legal Battle

Herman, 25, is suing Bellator Fighting Championships for allegedly breaching a six-fight, 30-month contract he signed into with the promotion on Oct. 28, 2008. Herman is also claiming tortuous interference on the part of Bellator for a handful of fight assignments — including a four-fight contract offer from Strikeforce — he’s tried to secure since January. The promotion is countersuing for alleged breach of contract as well. (Sherdog)

Featherweight Zac George earns Shine Fights release after two-month wait

Signing the contract – a one-year, three-fight deal – was easy. But after that, everything seemed hard.

“It was a total disaster,” George said after MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today reported that several fighters from the canceled “Shine Fights: Worlds Collide” event had not been paid.

“Worlds Collide” was scheduled to take place May 15 at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, N.C., before the North Carolina Boxing Authority pulled the plug on the show hours after it was set to begin… (MMAJunkie)

Athletic commission knocked out by City of North Van

City of North Vancouver councillors put the kibosh on hosting professional boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) fights in the city, after voting to disband the North Vancouver Athletic Commission Monday night.

“I’ve watched enough of it (Ultimate Fighting Championship) channel surfing to know that I find it repugnant … barbaric,” said Coun. Pam Bookham in an interview with The Outlook. (BCLocalNews)

Bully Beatdown Does Not Violate Violence Code

The CBSC received a complaint about this program from an anti-bullying activist who felt that it was inappropriate for the program to promote additional violence as the solution to the societal problem of bullying. MTV Canada argued that the premise of the program is to show “to instil a sense of empathy in the bully by asking him to face someone who might cause him/her fear or anxiety.” MTV also pointed out that the program carried a 14+ classification and viewer advisories. XYIENCE and Montreal’s TriStar Martial Arts Center Sign Sponsorship Agreement

XYIENCE announces that it has signed a sponsorship agreement with Tristar Gym, a 13,500 sq. ft. mixed martial arts (MMA) training center in Montreal. The agreement means that the facility will retail XYIENCE’s energy drink brand, Xenergy, the official energy of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and XYIENCE supplements, the original fight nutrition brand, to the exclusion of all other brands. The partnership was made official on Thursday, July 15, 2010, and also includes logo placement on the training facility’s mats and banner placement throughout the gym. (PRESS RELEASE)

Davies, Reilly Talk Legalizing MMA

Posted in MMA Payout, regulation on July 12th, 2010 by MMAPayout

British sports journalist Gareth Davies of the London Telegraph takes on New York Assemblyman Bob Reilly in a BBC debate over the moral and legal nature of mixed martial arts competitions.

Payout Perspective:

I think it bears repeating that it’s not enough to just call Bob Reilly ignorant and dismiss him. He’s got the ear of many people in New York and has proven to be an influential member of the Assembly, especially where MMA is concerned.

Reilly is a shining of example of where MMA’s effort to seek legalization needs to be taken to the next level. It’s not about shoving this $15-20 million economic windfall down New York’s throat, but instead sitting down with these people and addressing their concerns. That’s why it’s important to get Reilly and others like him to an event. These staunch opponents need to see the sport with their own eyes and have someone available to answer their questions openly and honestly.

In Reilly’s case, perhaps he’s already been extended numerous invitations by the UFC or even attended an event, but the way he speaks about the sport leads me to believe he’s yet to see an event for himself (or even watch but more than a highlight clip on the internet).

If Reilly truly is the rational, honest and good intentioned man that he claims to be, he’ll do everything in his power to educate himself about the sport on the whole – not just what he perceives to be bad, but all parts of the sport. That means watching an event, interacting with the crowd, and engaging in more due diligence than simple informal polls or “people come up to me on the street” non-sense.

I don’t expect he’ll do a complete 180 and start attending UFC events on the regular, but maybe he gains a better understanding of the sport that limits the extent of his now endless hyperbole or comes to see the sport as this generation’s version of his beloved boxing.

There’s no guarantee that either of those outcomes happen, but at least the MMA community will have done everything in its power to educate and convince a prominent opponent of its worth.

Two-year Vancouver trial MMA period could end with only one pro event having been held

Vancouver fires head of athletic commission

City council fired the head of the Vancouver Athletic Commission on Thursday after city staff and others complained about his conduct during the recent debate over allowing an Ultimate Fighting Championship event.

Citing a lack of confidence in Mirko Mladenovic, the council appointed Dave Rudberg, a longtime city bureaucrat, to replace him as head of the commission when it reconvenes later this month. (Vancouver Sun)

Ultimate fight: to convince Victoria (Australia)

THE Ultimate Fighting Championship will use Geelong star George Sotiropoulos and the lure of a $15 million tourist injection to convince the Victorian government to allow cage-fighting into Melbourne, after the sport was again rejected by the state.

Having sold out its debut Australian event at the 17,000-capacity Acer Arena in Sydney in February within 90 minutes, the UFC will be returning early next year but wants to infiltrate the Victorian market, with figures suggesting the state harbours the most mixed martial arts fans in the country. TUF 11 Finale: 1.4 HH

Posted in MMA Payout, ratings, TUF, TV on June 23rd, 2010 by MMAPayout

MMAPayout.com has learned that the TUF 11 Finale on Spike TV drew a 1.4 HH rating on the strength of 2 million average viewers over its three hour broadcast on Saturday night. However, the show peaked at 2.4 million viewers for the main event that saw Court McGee defeat Kris McCray.

The program also garnered a 2.3 in the M18-34 and 1.8 in the M18-49 demographics.

Payout Perspective:

The broadcast is probably a poor result when you compare it to previous TUF Finale events; the 1.4 HH is the lowest TUF Finale rating since Season 4 did a 1.1 HH (the season that Serra and Lutter won title shots).

I think this is ultimately a reflection of the quality of the fight card. Interesting fights will bring a crowd. No disrespect to McGee vs. McCray or Hamill vs. Jardine, but neither was a fight that anyone had a great deal of interest in seeing. This is especially true when you consider that the last Spike card featured Florian vs. Gomi and the next free television card (on Versus) will feature Jon Jones vs. Vlady Matyushenko. There’s a huge discrepancy there.

——-

Where does the UFC go from here? It would seem that more of the status quo is in order:

  • Two big name coaches: Team St-Pierre vs. Team Koscheck
  • No big format change: the talk within the industry is that it’s more or less the same format (nothing drastic)
  • Same promises: once again, officials are already leaking bits of news that it’s “the most exciting TUF ever”.

I’d obviously like to see them make a change. I tend to side with being proactive rather than reactive, but I’m not sure it’s that simple, either. If the company is planning to leverage TUF as a component of its international expansion strategy, then it can’t very well change the entire format right now.

With that said, I do think that each show is going to require some tinkering to fit in with its local market. Some of the crap that happened on the show in the US won’t fly in the UAE and China – or even markets like Australia.

MMAterial Facts 04/17/10: Strikeforce Nashville Edition – Dan Henderson Duels the UFC

Dan Henderson duels the UFC

A rematch with Silva was on the negotiating table as part of Henderson’s re-signing with UFC, he said, and so was a special deal to allow him a cut of first- and second-year profits from the UFC’s popular video game that featured his likeness.

“I never saw a dime,” Henderson says of the video game money. “Where do you think the money should go? The fighters are asked to sign away their likeness rights, and [the UFC] tries to get it forever.”

UFC President Dana White said he had “no interest” in responding to Henderson’s comments.

Another UFC business stance that irked Henderson was the company’s interest in charging apparel sponsors, like Henderson’s own Clinch Gear, a fee, such as $10,000 for four months of unlimited appearances in the UFC octagon. “It’s like UFC is sticking their hands in our pockets,” Henderson said.  (LA Times)

***

MMAPayout Notes:  This is a great read by the LA Times.  In the interview, Dan Henderson claims that he received a $650 weekly stipend for being a coach on TUF.  Henderson also states that Dana White told him he would write a $25,000 check for public appearances connected to a future bout after UFC 100, which he never received.  Another interesting note is that according to Henderson, being bumped from UFC 100 as the co-main event probably cost him around $1 million dollars.

Strikeforce banks on Temecula’s Henderson

But that doesn’t mean he won’t shy away from non-contact fights. Henderson criticized UFC recently for all their “red tape …” concerning the difficulties fighters have attaining sponsorships. He also chastised his former organization for not providing health coverage or retirement plans for fighters, saying that “there probably should be a fighters union.”

But Henderson signing a 16-month deal with Strikeforce went beyond differences with the UFC, his being denied a rematch with UFC superstar Anderson Silva or the fact that he’s now better paid.

He said the big attraction to Strikeforce was the chance to compete in front of what may be his largest audience yet.  (The Press Enterprise)

Strikeforce’s Shields, Smith Lend Helping Hand At Nashville Make-A-Wish Dinner, Assist PETA

STRIKEFORCE World Middleweight Champion Jake Shields and middleweight star  Scott “Hands Of Steel” Smith participated at former Tennessee Titan Kevin Carter’s Ninth Annual “Waiting For Wishes” Celebrity Waiter’s Dinner at The Palm on Tuesday night in Nashville, Tenn.

The event, which benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Middle Tennessee, included a silent and live auction and was attended by NFL players, professional athletes from all sports, and countless celebrities.

Shields and Smith were among those who served as waiters. (Strikeforce)

Strikeforce champ Shields is a vegetarian and proud of it

When getting down to fighting weight for his bout with Dan Henderson, Jake Shields won’t have to cut steak out of his diet. The Strikeforce middleweight champion is a vegeterian, and is the latest to star in an ad for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

“My last fight, I fought Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller,” he said in a PETA press release. “He came into the press conference with his fur coat … [s]o it was nice to go out there and kick his [expletive].”  (CageWriter)

With win, Shields can write his own ticket

Shields’ contract with Strikeforce is near its end. Technically, he still has one fight left after Saturday, but Shields says he has no championship clause like those in UFC deals, where the contract extends as long as you hold a championship. But he noted that the contract is running low on time, and that it’s doubtful he’ll get that last fight in before it runs out. At that point, he’ll be a free agent.

With UFC aggressively attempting to counter Strikeforce, and with a win over Henderson in a CBS main event on his resume, Shields couldn’t be in a better place at a more perfect time. Signing up a champion coming off a win over an established star on CBS would be lure enough, but with Shields, a win over Henderson would make him the most attractive potential opponent for UFC’s most popular fighter, Georges St. Pierre.  (Yahoo! EA Sports MMA: Pranks, Mayhem, and Strikeforce

EA Sports MMA will use a modified version of the Fight Night engine, so it’s natural to assume that the game will have the striking game down cold. But, according to Jackson, the complexity of the sport of mixed martial arts has resulted in a lot of work to that engine in order to properly replicate what happens in the octagon. “The striking controls are pretty naturally mapped,” Jackson said. “They feel good on the sticks. The one thing that was a weakness when [Fight Night Round 4] came out was their lack of button controls, and a lot of people ripped them apart for them. We knew that from the very start, too, that we wanted button controls in there, so we’ve added that. We’ve also had to do a lot of different things. In the boxing AI, there are only so many things you can do. You have a few main stances and so many punches you can throw out of it. The world opens up to a whole different level in MMA, and so a lot of different AI hooks had to be added and different ways to teach the AI how to fight.”   (GameSpot)

Silva’s Next Opponent: Chael Sonnen

Posted in booking, MMA Payout, UFC on April 15th, 2010 by MMAPayout

Dana White announced on ESPN’s “Jim Rome is Burning” that Anderson Silva’s next opponent will be UFC middleweight and former WEC middleweight champion Chael Sonnen.

“He’s got a real tough fight coming up. His next fight’s going to be against Chael Sonnen, and Chael Sonnen’s one of these guys who’s not going to lay back, not do what these other guys (did),” White told Rome.

He believes that Sonnen’s style will not allow for any showboating or avoidance, as Silva showed in his last fight with Demian Maia.

“When he’s been in this position when these types of fights have happened, it’s been against real good jiu-jitsu guys, guys that want to get the fight to the ground. Well, Chael Sonnen’s going to want to take this fight to the ground, but he’s going to double leg him and bring him down,” said White.

Payout Perspective:

I think I’m having a slight change of heart where Anderson Silva at 185lbs. is concerned. In this week’s UFC 112: Payout Perspective I stated that I didn’t believe there was much interest left in Anderson at middleweight, and while I still believe that’s the case today, I could see that changing in the next couple of months.

Yesterday’s announcement that Silva will defend against Sonnen over the summer likely gave fans an ugly flashback to last Saturday’s performance – it’s too soon! – but Sonnen’s comments immediately after the announcement have given me hope. This main event could sell very well on the combination of Sonnen’s hyping prowess, the UFC’s fan bases growing disdain for Anderson Silva, and the fact that UFC will likely throw a ton of money into promoting this bout.

The UFC has a very obvious play here and that’s to remind everyone just how much Silva pissed them off – he’s this uber talented enigma that just refuses to fight sometimes – and here’s their chance to see him get what he’s got coming to him. Sonnen obviously plays a role in that.

I’ve talked previously about how guys like Dan Hardy and Chael Sonnen are pioneering the trash talking PR strategy for fight hype, but there’s a distinct difference between Sonnen and Hardy: attitude and demeanor. Dan Hardy is a prankster with a quick whit – somewhat of a cheeky Brit – but he doesn’t quite have that believability about him. Sonnen, though, has this straight-faced, cut-to-the-chase, and conservative attitude that is absolutely convincing; if he tells someone they’re an idiot and he wants to whoop their ass, he means it.

That’s effective in and of itself, but even more so now that people are naturally more inclined to believe him, simply because they really want to see someone take the fight to Anderson after his performance at UFC 112.

UFC 112: Payout Perspective

Posted in Featured, MMA Payout, opinion and analysis, pay-per-view, UFC on April 12th, 2010 by MMAPayout

Welcome to another edition of Payout Perspective! This week we take a look at UFC 112: Invincible, which was held at The Concert Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE on Saturday, April 10th. The event marked both the UFC’s debut in Abu Dhabi and its first-ever outdoor show. UFC 112 was headlined by two title fights: Anderson Silva took on Demian Maia at 185 lbs. while BJ Penn fought Frankie Edgar for the lightweight strap.

Silva decisions Maia, disappoints again

There’s no sugarcoating this performance: Anderson Silva made a mockery of the sport at UFC 112. Silva’s playful toying with Maia quickly turned into crass and disrespectful taunting; his unwillingness to engage in the latter rounds also displayed an utter disregard for the sport, the fans, and the promotion that have so fiercely supported him in the past.

I don’t have any interest in hypothesizing why Silva fought like he did, but I am keen on exploring what are likely to be the consequences of his actions.

I’ll first say that it’s not the end of the world. Fights like Silva’s are simply part of the growing pains that this sport is going to have to endure in order to progress. It’s all one big learning curve where the promotions and fighters struggle to figure out what the fans want and how they can deliver a product that meets those requirements on a consistent basis.

Every sport has gone through similar embarrassing moments of unsportsmanlike conduct or utterly incomprehensible performance – no one is immune. There’s no need to panic.

There seems to be a tendency amongst many MMA fans – especially the hardcores – to watch and critique every event as if the future of the sport depended on the outcome. Yet, despite the sports precarious position within the sports landscape – especially on the regulatory side – there’s simply no need to view the sport from this perspective.

Certainly, the fans have a right to be mad after UFC 112 – they paid good money to watch Silva dick around for five rounds and disrespect the sport they love and support – but MMA isn’t going to fall off a cliff just because of this one event or any single event.

Is there a cause for concern? Sure, there’s no denying that Silva’s performance will reflect poorly upon his own stock, that of the UFC’s, and MMA in general. It’s not going to crush the sport, though.

The UFC has gained a reputation for putting on great fights on a consistent basis and Silva’s fight will challenge that notion; a notion, I might add, that’s already been put to the test in recent months with events like UFC 103, 106, 109, and 110. Again, the fight was the type of main event that can overshadow the rest of the card, which was fairly good.

Luckily, the non-domestic nature of the event likely ensured that the event was purchased by only the more devout of MMA fans – and they already know the story with Silva. He’s hit-or-miss.

The most significant consequence of the fight is probably the affect it will have on the entire UFC middleweight division and the way the UFC is able to schedule its fight cards in the future. Title fights push sales and because there’s going to be very little interest in Silva fighting at 185lbs again, the UFC is effectively down to four titles. That makes it much more difficult to spread the wealth and ensure that events are headlined properly (which is where things got rough for the UFC last fall).

So, what do you do if you’re the UFC? Silva’s not going to draw very well at 185lbs, but there are still some fights left for him at the weight class with Chael Sonnen and Vitor Belfort. He would, however, still draw very well against a George St-Pierre or contender at 205lbs, and that’s because the fans understand it would be the type of challenge he’s most likely to respond to.

The ironic thing is that had Silva simply dispatched of Maia in the first round like he demonstrated was possible, the UFC would have brought GSP into the Octagon and announced a title fight at 170lbs on the sport. They didn’t fly Georges all the way to Abu Dhabi just to sit cage side.

Edgar earns controversial decision victory, unseats Penn

The Penn-Edgar fight ended in such controversy that it might not be such a bad thing that the Silva fight managed to overshadow everything else that happened on the entire card. The flipside, of course, is that the more press the controversial decision receives, the better sales opportunity the UFC will have in any potential future rematch.

From a matchmaking standpoint, the controversy has given the UFC’s lightweight division a needed shot in the arm. Not only will the division retain BJ Penn – its most popular fighter – for the foreseeable future, but the gap between the best and the next has just been narrowed considerably. The number of interesting match-ups between the likes of Frankie Edgar, BJ Penn, Gray Maynard, Tyson Griffin, and Kenny Florian are enormous.

Dana White loses his Twitter cool

Dana White, like most, was a fan before he became involved in the business. He’s also the emotional type that wears his heart on his sleeve and always says what he feels. While that’s admirable and the source of much of his popularity with UFC fans, it can also be a detriment when he loses his cool and over-reacts to certain situations.

Leadership is about many things, but one in particular is setting an example. White is the sport’s foremost representative and there’s a certain responsibility that comes with that in the sense that sometimes he can’t just say what he’s thinking. Especially if he wants to be the guy that takes this sport to the next level, because where he and the Fertitta brothers want this sport to go, there’s very little tolerance for the sort of profanity-laced tirades against the media or the fans that White has exhibited in the past 24 months.

Moreover, when White is visibly shaking during a post-fight press conference and ranting in post-fight interviews about Anderson Silva, it helps to induce the sort of panic amongst fans that really isn’t necessary. Yes, the Silva fight sucked and the fans are disappointed, but it’s not the end of the world – the message coming from the UFC needs to be one of reassurance, not panic.

The situation is quite analogous to customer service in any sort of goods or services industry. The customer that has a complaint handled by a calm, confident, and thorough representative will come away reassured about the value of their purchase. The customer that deals with an angry, depressed, ranting lunatic is likely to take their business elsewhere.

UFC’s first outdoor event goes off without a hitch

The Silva controversy also overshadowed the fact that UFC 112 was the UFC’s first-ever outdoor event and everything more or less went according to plan from an operational perspective. The concerns surrounding heat, humidity, and/or wind really never materialized.

There are a few kinks that the organization needs to work out on the press side – e.g., finding adequate bandwidth to supply their digital channels with more fight week content – but those are small in nature and should be rectified by the time the UFC returns.

UFC 112 shown for free in Germany on UFCLive.com

The UFC may have been banned from television in Bavaria, but the UFC made sure its fans in Germany were able to watch the event for on UFCLive.com. Users logging on with a German IP address were able watch the event for free.

It’s definitely interesting to see the UFC continuing to ramp up its use of online distribution mediums – not unexpected. J

Sponsorship Watch

UFC 112 was devoid of any sponsorship from the alcohol category – namely Bud Light and Tequilla Casadores. I’m inclined to believe that this is likely because of the strict alcohol consumption laws in the UAE. However, it could also simply be a function of the anticipated buyrate for the event.

Lumber Liquidators made its debut on the UFC canvas, which is perhaps further support that there was less demand from the UFC’s traditional sponsors than for a domestic event. Edge Shave Gel was also given a canvas placement and that usually doesn’t happen for a bigger event (even though Edge has invested a good amount of time and money on the activation side of its partnership; check out the UFC Vault contest they’re running).

There weren’t a ton of new fighter sponsors for the event, but the fact that we’re seeing Mom and Pop type sponsorships for some of these guys is further indication that the rumours about the$100,000 sponsorship tax aren’t 100% accurate.

UFC and JAKKS Pacific Release New Line

Posted in collectibles, licensing, merchandise, MMA Payout, UFC on April 8th, 2010 by MMAPayout

Jesse Holland of MMAMania.com does a good job of breaking down the latest series of UFC figurines to come out of JAKKS Pacific (courtesy of the UFC Toys Facebook page). Information is also available on the Jakks website.

Payout Perspective:

Here’s where the UFC license sharing deal between JAKKS and Round 5 MMA comes into play. Many of the new figurines that debut as part of this new series with JAKKS were fighters originally held by Round 5. The deal has opened up a greater array of options to both companies, including promotional tie-in with the much larger and more recognizable UFC brand.

It’s a good example of co-operation within the industry growing the entire pie of market demand.

Note: the use of social media by the UFC; these guys have  a Facebook page and Twitter account for nearly everything it seems. Traffic on social networking sites is out-pacing even the most highly visited of traditional sites — it’s a smart move.

Strikeforce Challengers 7 Wrap-Up

Posted in MMA Payout, payouts, ratings, Strikeforce on April 1st, 2010 by MMAPayout

The Staff at MMAJunkie are reporting that Strikeforce Challengers 7 drew 4,963 to the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California last Friday, which was good for a live gate of $109,222.

“Strikeforce Challengers VII: Johnson vs. Mahe” was the second 2010 edition of the organization’s prospects-based events series.

The attendance figures mark a sharp increase for the previous edition of Strikeforce Challengers, held Feb. 26 in San Jose, Calif. That show drew 2,318 attendees for a live gate of $86,440.

The figures for “Johnson vs. Mahe” represent an increase of an astounding 114 percent in attendance, as well as a 26 percent increase in gate revenue from “Strikeforce Challengers VI: Kaufman vs. Hashi.”

MMAJunkie also reported the event garned a very solid 1.0 rating with an average audience of 316,000 viewers – a 111% increase over the previous Challenger show. However, it should be noted that the event likely benefited greatly from Showtime’s free trial weekend where the premium channel was available to all digital cable and satellite subscribers.

The Staff at MMAWeekly acquired the fighter paydays from the California State Athletic Commission that totaled $73,000.

-Lavar Johnson $16,000 (includes $8,000 win bonus) def. Lolohea Mahe $3,000
-Ron “Abongo” Humphrey $7,000 (includes $3,500 win bonus) def. George Bush III $5,000
-Andre Galvao $10,000 def. Luke Stewart $5,000
-Miesha Tate: $5,000 (includes $2,000 win bonus) def. Zoila Frausto: $3,000
-Justin Wilcox: $12,000 (includes $6,000 win bonus) def. Shamar Bailey: $4,000
-Daniel Cormier: $500 def. John Devine: $2,500

STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS 7 DISCLOSED FIGHTER PAYROLL: $73,000

Payout Perspective:

The Strikeforce Challengers 7 event held in the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California turned out to be a successful event for Strikeforce.  Coming into the event, I was unusually noticing a healthy amount of traffic for the event, which is rare for a Challenger events.  There were 4 factors that played a huge role in the building the hype for this event:

  1. Lavar Johnson’s Story Line – Coming back after being wounded from a gun shot was definitely a story getting a fairly good amount of press.  The Fresno crowd was definitely behind Johnson in his comeback fight after almost losing his life.
  2. Miesha Tate vs Zoila Frausto Storyline – There was a legitimate storyline between these two fighters even before the bout was booked.  Zoila wanted to fight Miesha and said some words, which then were addressed by Miesha.  This back and forth spilled over to the internet, interviews, and chat rooms.  Not only the storyline, but MMA fans have taken a liking to Tate, and may be the 3rd most marketable fighter Strikeforce has after Gina Carano and Cyborg Santos.
  3. Solid Matchmaking – Strikeforce booked Johnson, Tate, Galvao, Stewart, Cormier , Humphrey, Wilcox, and Bailey.  All are considered young prospects in MMA and were all matched up in competitive matches coming into the event.  A good number of fans considered this one of the better Strikeforce Challenger events.
  4. Showtime Advertising  Free Preview Weekend – Showtime and Strikeforce did a great job at letting MMA fans know that this weekend everyone would get the chance to watch the Strikeforce Challengers event along with the Super 6 Boxing tournament bout between Dirrell and Abraham event for free.  The free Showtime weekend exposed a good amount of combat sport fans to tune in on Friday, which was almost treated as the appetizer to a great combat sports weekend.  Through the free weekend promotion, Showtime’s reach jumped from around 12-18 million homes to 54 million.

Numbers in Perspective:

Now, there is no denying the fact that the 316,000 viewers had a lot to do with the free weekend preview, but lets take a closer look.  The Challengers 6 event, which was headlined by Kaufman vs Hashi for the 135 lbs Women’s Strikeforce belt, and which did not benefit from a free-preview weekend garnered 150K viewers, peaking at 189K.  These numbers were substantially higher than the usual numbers Challenger events get, which are estimated to be around 100K viewers. For the sake of contrast, lets take a look at other Strikeforce ratings:

  • Strikeforce Challengers 7 – 316K viewers
  • Strikeforce: Lawler vs Shields – 275K viewers
  • Strikeforce: Le vs Smith – 341K viewers

Here are the ratings for the weekend, which pinned the UFC, HBO Boxing, and Showtime Boxing head to head:

  • UFC 111 Prelim’s on Spike – 1.2 Million viewers
  • Showtime Boxing (Dirrell vs Abraham) – 736K viewers
  • HBO Boxing (Maidana vs Cayo) – 650K Viewers

After comparing these numbers, its obvious to see that Showtime benefited greatly due to the free-preview by getting good ratings for the Strikeforce Challengers show on Friday and the Super Six boxing bout on Saturday, beating out HBO boxing .  One thing we will keep our eyes on is the Strikeforce viewership numbers, which appear to be rising ever since the Novemver 7th Strikeforce: Fedor vs Rogers CBS event.  In their latest big Showtime event, Strikeforce Miami (Diaz, Walker, Lashley) garnered 517K viewers, which just finished behind Kimbo vs Tank (522K viewers) and the MMA ratings leader event at Showtime, Gina Carano vs Cyborg Santos (576K viewers).

Liddell-Franklin Rumored for UFC 115; Dana White Issues Denial

Light heavyweights Rich Franklin and Chuck Liddell are penciled in for a June showdown.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to the promotion that the two have verbally agreed to face each other in June at UFC 115, though contracts have yet to be finalized.

The new matchup replaces a planned third meeting between Liddell and Tito Ortiz that had been expected for the promotion’s first trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and may have been arranged as a result of Franklin’s unexpected involvement in “TUF 11.”  (MMAJunkie)

Former UFC champions Chuck Liddell  and Rich Franklin have verbally agreed to meet in a light heavyweight tilt in June, Sherdog.com has learned from multiple sources. UFC 115, though not officially announced, has been tentatively scheduled for June 12 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

A message posted late Saturday on UFC President Dana White’s Twitter account denied that the bout was slated. “We are doing couture vs franklin not chuck,” read the post.

Sherdog.com re-affirmed with its sources that the Liddell-Franklin bout is still in play.  (Sherdog)

Strikeforce Standing Ground on April 17, Sees DREAM co-promotion as key component in future

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker on Friday told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that “Strikeforce: Nashville” will not be moved from its April 17 date to sidestep a potential head-to-head clash with a rumored UFC event on the same night.

“It’s the 17th and it’s full steam ahead,” Coker said. “The 17th was always a good day when we chose it. We still feel the same way, and so does CBS.”  (MMAJunkie)

***

“I worked for K-1 for about eight years, and the ownership group of K-1 and DREAM is still the same,” Coker said. “I’ve maintained good relationships over there, and it’s always been my dream – that’s kind of a pun, right? – to have our guys fight their guys and to see who would end up on top. If our guys win, that’s fantastic. If [their guy] wins, then that’s just great. It’s just good competition.

“I think it’s the true nature of sports to compete. Now we have the DREAM champion against our champion, and especially for the hardcore fans, I don’t think it gets any better than that.”  (MMAJunkie)

Bellator calls Monday press conference, expected to announce signing of Roger Huerta

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight Roger Huerta (20-3-1 MMA, 0-0 Bellator) is set to test his mettle in Bellator Fighting Championships’ season two eight-man lightweight tournament.

Sources close to the situation confirmed to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the popular lightweight received his formal release from the UFC this week, which opened the door to finalize a deal with the upstart promotion.

Bellator has called a video press conference for Monday at 3 p.m. ET that will stream live at Bellator.com.   (MMAJunkie)

One-On-One With Bellator Fighting Championships CEO Bjorn Rebney

So at Bellator, we front end load our agreements, so when he or she is in the tournament they have the opportunity to make a great deal of money, very quickly.

While the typical model which is 3 and 3, or 6 and 6, or 8 and 8, you slowly but surely work your way up, and if you lose you get potentially cut.

Ours is different, it’s an upside down model which means fighters can make a lot of money very quickly with us. It’s very attractive, we’ve been able to get a lot of great fighters on board based on their belief in themselves to compete, and earn that money. …

In another organization if you lose, you can get cut, or get another shot against a tough opponent. In our organization it’s not a different scenario, but it is a scenario where you can make a great deal of money, very quickly. (Bleacher Report)

5K Interview: Fedor Emelianenko manager and M-1 CEO Vadim Finklestein

FiveKnuckles.com: It has been said that Fedor has signed a 3-fight deal with Strikeforce and has two fights remaining with the next one coming against Fabricio Werdum this summer. After this deal has elapsed, would it be possible to see Fedor in the UFC?

Vadim Finkelstein: It depends on UFC. We would like to cooperate with them. Everything depends on them, their diplomacy. It would be possible if they are flexible.

FiveKnuckles.com: You tried cooperating with them this summer, but after negotiating with Dana White extensively to no avail, he said many bad things about you and M-1. What are your thoughts on Dana White personally?

Vadim Finkelstein: That’s his character, he just loves to call names. He didn’t say bad things about M-1 only, there were a lot of situations where he was harsh. It makes me glad when Dana White talks about us. I respect the UFC, they’ve done a lot for the development of MMA, so I can pardon them such attacks. We respect him and let him grumble.   (Five Knuckles)

The Ultimate Fighting Championship® travels to Abu Dhabi for the first time and fans there will witness one of the organization’s greatest events ever, as middleweight titleholder Anderson “The Spider” Silva faces the extraordinary BJJ of Demian Maia. Lightweight champion BJ Penn looks to continue his dominant reign when he takes on Frankie Edgar in the double main event of UFC® 112.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Was it done to create some confusion in the marketplace in Nashville? Maybe. I don’t know. I’m not sure,” said Coker. “Is it good for mixed martial arts? I’m not sure. I don’t think so. I don’t think that when a company’s trying to counter-program you just to impact your ratings, it’s– and this could go back and forth. One day, when CBS says, ‘Alright, we’re going to go head-to-head against your pay-per-view date and you can watch Fedor (Emelianenko) or Dan Henderson for free on TV or buy a pay-per-view,’ people are going to have choices at that point. But that’s something they’d never do. CBS went out of its way to make sure there was nothing else on April 17.”  (Scott Coker Addressing UFC Rumors, Sherdog)

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports talks about the possibility of Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey exceeding initial buyrate expectations of 500,000 to 700,000 for the fight held at Cowboys Stadium.

The closed-circuit locations and presales in the East are at record levels, surpassing where they were in 2007 for the Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight. Indications are that the pay-per-view is tracking better than expected, and Arum said he won’t be shocked if it touches 900,000 buyers.

That’s an astonishing number for just about any fight but even more so for a bout against a largely unknown opponent like Clottey, who doesn’t bring with him a large fan base.

Had Pacquiao-Clottey fought two years ago, Arum would have been lucky to have sold a quarter of the tickets he has sold for Saturday’s card.

Payout Perspective:

There were two possibilities coming out of the Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiation debacle:

1.) The fans would throw up their hands and say “we’re done!”

2.) All that arguing back and forth would generate so much press over a two month period to raise the profile and interest levels of both fighters.

It would seem the latter has taken place. The fans won’t be happy until they see Mayweather-Pacquiao, but in the mean time the interest level in these two fighters has never been higher. I, too, would be surprised if this fight didn’t hit 700,000 buys; and Mayweather-Mosley will like exceed 1 million buys.

Pretty good numbers for the sport. These two fighters could do a lot to revive interest in the sport across the globe.

MMA’s April Chess Match

Posted in advertising, booking, Featured, MMA Payout, opinion and analysis, TV, UFC on March 6th, 2010 by MMAPayout

Mike Chiappetta of MMAFighting.com discusses the latest news regarding a possible UFC on Spike event for April 17th, designed to counter-program the Strikeforce on CBS card on the same day.

The UFC is in the process of laying the groundwork for an April 17 show to counter the Strikeforce on CBS offering, MMA Fighting has learned.

Though the company has not officially announced the event and it should not be considered a done deal, two separate sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed that the promotion has begun to ramp up its efforts over the last several hours and that Spike TV — the likely broadcast outlet for the show — has been informed of the decision.

Strikeforce’s show is planned for the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, and will feature three title bouts, including a middleweight championship main event pitting current titleholder Jake Shields against former UFC star Dan Henderson. The show could reportedly be moved back a week to April 24 — which would result in a head-to-head battle with WEC’s first pay-per-view offering — but tickets sales for the Strikeforce event have already begun, and a change would also require a shift in the CBS programming schedule.

Payout Perspective:

Event scheduling in the month of April is quickly becoming a chess match of epic proportions as the UFC looks to make life difficult for Strikeforce on CBS, while Strikeforce considers the possibility of switching dates to avoid going head-to-head with Kimbo Slice (and do some counter-programming of its own; nixing the WEC’s debut PPV a week later).

I can kind of understand the desire of the UFC to crush its competition: monopolies can be beneficial in certain contexts. Moreover, the production quality and matchmaking at Strikeforce has been suspect at times, which might leave the UFC in the position of feeling like it has to be the sole flag bearer for the sport.

However, I’m also inclined to think that it’s currently to the UFC’s advantage to have MMA on network television – regardless of whom is producing it – because it generates interest and awareness for the sport. The Strikeforce production isn’t so awful that it’s a detriment to MMA; especially with match-ups like Henderson-Shields, Mousasi-Lawal, and Melendez-Aoki.

If I were the UFC, I’d develop a sneaky little ambush marketing campaign, and buy up $1,000,000 worth of ad space on CBS to promote the UFC brand. The UFC could advertise the WEC 48 PPV scheduled for April 24th and UFC 113 on May 8th; both of which would help confound the Strikeforce branding message on that night.

Sound crazy? It’s becoming a popular trend in the sports world; especially during the latest Winter Olympics. Further consider the fact that Mauro Renallo and Gus Johnson mention the UFC name on CBS more than they do Strikeforce. The UFC could really position itself to steal a number of those impressions on April 17th. The only roadblock to this plan might be CBS’s outright refusal to sell the ad space, but even at that, I have to think they’d sell if they knew they weren’t being counter-programmed.

Besides, the idea of counter-programming seems so inefficient. The cynic in me is inclined to believe that Fedor and M-1 may very well tear down Strikeforce regardless of what the UFC does. If not, big events that only garner $8,000 in merchandise sales or $350,000 in gate revenues, while paying out that much in fighter salaries (not to mention production costs), likely will.

Why spend all this time and money to counter-programming something that hasn’t proven to be sustainable in its newest form?

….

The current speculation is that the UFC has lined up Kimbo Slice to headline this April 17th card, possibly against Matt Mitrione of TUF 10.

The short-term benefit of a Kimbo headline is obvious, but I wonder how much damage it might do to the UFC’s long-term credibility. Kimbo sells for reasons other than his fighting ability; in fact, we saw over the course of TUF 10 and its finale that interest had declined somewhat – the cat was out of the bag regarding his skills. So, what does it say that the UFC would put him in a headlining position?

The UFC has worked very hard to cultivate its existing credibility with the mainstream media and fan base – of which, admittedly, there still isn’t as much as we’d all like. Why jeopardize that? Why put non-MMA fighters in a headlining position on an MMA card?

If Strikeforce wanted to promote Herschel Walker vs. James Toney, the UFC should have let them. No successful, long-term mixed martial arts endeavor will ever be built upon the backs of non-MMA fighters – this is a guarantee.

Now the UFC has been sucked into this high risk, high reward game that might end up backfiring on them and the entire industry.

Station Casinos Reaches Deal with Creditors

Posted in financial, legal, MMA Payout, Station Casinos on March 5th, 2010 by MMAPayout

Steve Green of the Las Vegas Sun reports that the management of Station Casinos have reached a deal in principal with key lenders that will allow them to reorganize and retain control of the company.

While the company didn’t disclose details, the arrangement with lenders holding $2.475 billion of debt secured by four of Station’s most valuable hotel-casinos is expected to result in the lenders swapping some debt for equity in the company.

While there has been discussion in the bankruptcy case that the lenders could take control of the four properties and that the properties would be spun off or sold, the agreement disclosed today does not do that.

Instead, the deal — if approved — would keep the company and its 18 casino properties and extensive land holdings together.

It’s expected members of the founding Fertitta family, along with Station majority owner Colony Capital of Los Angeles, would maintain equity stakes.

The Fertittas would make a substantial, but undisclosed, equity investment and the current management team led by Chairman and Chief Executive Frank Fertitta III would continue to lead the company.

Payout Perspective:

The deal was unofficially announced February 25th; just a few weeks ahead of the deadline imposed upon the parties by US Bankruptcy Court Judge Gregg Zive. The expectation is that a formal announcement will take place this summer.

Note: the “substantial, but undisclosed, equity investment” that the Fertittas will have to make in order to retain control of the company. The cash from the 10% sale of Zuffa LLC. to Flash Entertainment in Abu Dhabi might come in handy.

Strikeforce-CBS Partnership May Depend on 4/17

Posted in MMA Payout, Strikeforce, TV on March 5th, 2010 by MMAPayout

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer divulges that Strikeforce: Nashville may determine the fate of MMA – or at the very least Strikeforce – on CBS Primetime.

The history of MMA on CBS has been two successes on the backs of Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano; a lukewarm
success on a show built around Emelianenko; and a failure on a show built around Nick Diaz and Shields in 2008.

“If we can get a good performance from this, then we’re really on our way,” said Kahl in the interview.

Kahl said CBS has agreed to do the show, which will be cross-promoted with an episode of NCIS: Los Angeles, one of
the network’s most popular shows, airing on Tuesdays at 9 p.m., with an MMA theme and featuring several Strikeforce
fighters, scheduled to air a week before the show.

Right now, CBS’ commitment to MMA is just for this show, but a strong performance on a series of events could lead to
CBS officially agreeing to quarterly shows. Kahl, a supporter of MMA on CBS, noted in the interview that MMA is still
considered controversial programming in some circles. In addition, the ratings, while strong with young males which
does allow CBS to draw advertisers they usually don’t get on Saturdays, are significantly lower than usual programming
in those time slots that cause less controversy and are guaranteed to end on time.

Payout Perspective:

Meltzer essentially captures the plight of the major networks have with MMA: whatever audience they gain as the result of MMA television is offset or surpassed by the audience they lose. Thus, at what point do they sacrifice their existing audience for something new and shiny? This is especially true where Strikeforce is concerned, because it doesn’t have the brand equity or star power necessary to pull in an 18-34 year-old crowd capable of really making it worth a network’s while.

NCIS: LA is not only one of the most popular shows on television, but its demographic skews older and more conservative. Thus the cross-promotion might be seen as a way to generate awareness and interest in Strikeforce from some of the audience that CBS fears it may lose in that primetime slot on Saturday. Whether that’s the result they get remains to be seen.

Nonetheless, the importance of this show cannot be understated: if the ratings tank, it could very well mean the end of Strikeforce on CBS. The flip side, of course, is that Strikeforce has the opportunity to solidify a strategically important distribution channel for itself moving forward; the kind that would provide it with enough exposure to further build the equity of its brand and its stars.

UFC and Strikeforce Gearing for 4/17 Collision

Dana White confirmed today that UFC is running a show on April 17th, head-to-head with the announced Strikeforce show on CBS.  The event would air most likely on Spike TV.  The Wanderlei Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama match is not the main event.  The only thing confirmed is they are trying to finalize a Matt Serra vs. Mike Swick semifinal fight today.

There had been talk of a possibility that if UFC scheduled a show on that date, CBS may move the Strikefroce show to April 24th, which would go head-to-head with the WEC PPV in Sacramento. (F4WOnline)

MMA on CBS

After officially announcing April 17 as the return for MMA on CBS, sources tell SI.com that CBS is willing to move the card back a week if, as rumored, the UFC decides to move ahead with counter-programing. That would put Strikeforce in direct competition with Zuffa’s first attempt at selling WEC on pay-per-view, and likely signal the commencement of major ground operations between the promotional companies.

It was initially thought that production of an April 24 MMA card on CBS was unlikely since the Showtime broadcast crew, led by producer David Dinkins Jr., was handling duties for the second round of the premium network’s Super Six 168-pound boxing tournament that night. But Kelly Kahl, the senior executive vice president of CBS prime time, told SI.com that it as his impression “things were fluid” regarding the production dates, though he didn’t know for certain.   (Sports Illustrated)

RUMOR: CBS Radio personality Carmichael Dave adds to the Strikeforce vs UFC rumors: James Toney will make his MMA debut April 17th against Kimbo Slice at Vanderbilt Arena in Tennessee. Mike Swick will fight Matt Serra in the main event.  The fight would air on Spike TV, according to the rumor.

DirecTV deal report ‘not true’ according to Versus

Apparently, there’s been another one today, as MMA blog Cage Potato (via SB Nation) reported that the two sides were going to quietly end their mess just in time for fight fans:

“    Sources close to the situation tell CagePotato that the dispute will come quietly to an end next week, with DirecTV subscribers once again able to purchase Versus as part of a special sports tier. While it won’t come in time for this weekend’s WEC card, MMA fans with DirecTV should have the opportunity to purchase the channel by the time the UFC runs its first event on the network later this month.”

A source with Versus with knowledge of the negotiations told us that the report is “not true” and that “nothing is imminent.” The source told us that our report from last month stands today: “At this time, we are not optimistic that an agreement will be in place with DirecTV in time for the start of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.”

That said, the sense we get is that the negotiations are ongoing and that a deal could materialize quickly. Does that mean Versus will agree to a “special sports tier” to get back on DirecTV? Unlikely. Does that mean this dispute will end “quietly” at some point? Very unlikely, considering the level of rancor here. Does that mean we could still see the NHL on Versus on DirecTV in time of the playoffs? We remain optimistic.  (Yahoo! Sports)

MFC cancels fight card after Edmonton venue operators pull rug out from MMA promotion

Maximum Fighting Championships owner and president Mark Pavelich originally booked the Winspear for Friday, April 9, but the concert hall’s management later backed out. They told Pavelich the booking was a mistake because the Winspear doesn’t host sporting events.

“At the beginning we said, we’ll find a (different) venue real quick,” Pavelich said in an interview. “But there’s four, five factors we have to match up.”

Pavelich struggled to find a different venue, but has secured the Edmonton Expo Centre (formerly Northlands AgriCom) for a different fight on Friday, May 7. Tickets go on sale Monday through MFC and Ticketmaster.

Pavelich remains angry about how the Winspear handled the situation. “There’s not a Tylenol pill on the planet big enough to cure me of the headache they’ve caused me,” he said.

By cancelling the April event, Pavelich said he has lost $500,000 in corporate sponsorship, breach-of-contract fees and printing costs. He hasn’t filed a lawsuit but has asked the Winspear to cough up the money he’s lost.

“I want them to pay for my damages and them I’m OK,” he said. “I don’t want to sue anyone. And you know what would be nice: a sincere sorry.”  (Vancouver Sun)

A long time coming, Zuma’s Kaufman grabs world MMA title

She’s come a long way since training as a teenage dancer at a studio in University Heights mall.

Last Friday (Feb. 26), in front of a crowd of 2,322 at San Jose’s Civic Auditorium, professional mixed martial arts star Sarah Kaufman (11-0) became the first Strikeforce women’s welterweight (135 pounds) champion.

“It’s the biggest platform for women in the world and it’s the biggest title for my weight category, so I’m really happy to have that now.”

Kaufman, 24, won a five-round, unanimous decision over Japan’s Takayo Hashi (12-2) in the Strikeforce Challengers main event.

On paper, Hashi was ranked the No. 2 contender to Kaufman, long considered by many in the MMA industry as the world’s No. 1 female MMA fighter for her weight class.

“The fight itself wasn’t the most physical or challenging that I’ve had,” Kaufman said. “I really felt like my prep was similar to my previous fights but knowing this was a big moment for women’s MMA and my shot for the title I felt the need to have a good showing.”  (BC Local News)

Victoria’s Armageddon FC lands national MMA TV deal

Promoters of a cage fighting event at Langford’s Bear Mountain Arena on March 6 have signed a deal with The Fight Network to have the mixed-martial arts bout broadcast across Canada.

Armageddon Fighting Championships partner Jason Heit said the 15-fight event — AFCII: Aftershock — will be taped and likely aired two weeks later. The Fight Network has 1.6 million subscribers through cable and satellite carriers in Canada.

The national TV exposure is a major coup for Heit and partner Darren Owen, who drew about 2,000 fans to their first event last August in Langford after the controversial cage fighting event was spurned by the city of Victoria and the local athletic commission. Although it is considered one of the world’s fastest growing sports and popular with the twentysomething demographic, the fights have been criticized as being brutal and promoting violence. Mixed martial arts is banned in many cities across Canada, including Vancouver.

“It’s been three years of hard work, so we’re pretty excited about this,” said Heit.

HDNET, another specialty channel covering wrestling and extreme fighting, will also be on location at Bear Mountain Arena to film its weekly program, Inside Mixed Martial Arts, and capture highlights.  (Vancouver Sun)

Coker: Relationship with M-1 Global strong, Emelianenko news expected “in a couple of days”

“I can tell you this: we’ve been having really good dialogue with M-1 Global and (M-1 Global president) Vadim Finkelchtein, and I think we’re in the final stages of buttoning everything up to make that happen again,” Coker said. “I think we’ll have an announcement soon on that, but I feel very confident we’ll be promoting Fedor here in the near future.” … “We’re at the 11th hour of getting this done, and I think in a couple of days we’ll have something to announce.”

So it appears Strikeforce may be involved in another Emelianenko fight sooner rather than later. And perhaps most importantly for those vested in the future of the California-based promotion, Coker said the financial success of Strikeforce does not rest on the shoulders of “The Last Emperor.”

“Our company is not built off of one athlete,” Coker said. “Our company, we have some amazing athletes on our roster now, and we’ve got some of the best fighters in the world. I think they can compete against anybody. Fedor is an amazing athlete. I’ve followed his career for many years. Fedor is Fedor, and he’s an amazing asset, but our company is not built financially off of just one guy.

“Believe me, my guys are very smart about building a model that works for us and works for M-1 Global. I think that we’re at that point where that had to be looked at. We looked at it. We’re not going to put all of our eggs into one basket and roll the dice with one guy. We’re built for longevity. This is not a sprint; this is going to be a long-distance race.” (MMAJunkie)

Vadim Finkelstein clears the air on Mousasi leaving M1 and Fedor’s contract negotiations

The problem isn’t there. The fight will take place. We’re planning on showing the bout in over 100 countries. For all of that to go smoothly we had to postpone the event. Unfortunately I do not know the date yet. It’s most likely going to be in early May. The bout is also postponed because of some other contract issues. Obviously there are always disagreements and technical questions, but everybody deals with those. (MiddleEasy)

Herschel Walker’s network static

Walker’s absence takes the show’s narrative in a different direction: Without a mass-media hook, ratings will depend almost exclusively on the appetite for solid fights between anonymous (to network viewers) athletes on over-the-air television. Shinya Aoki, Gilbert Melendez and Gegard Mousasi are all capable and intriguing fighters, but they have none of the resonance that an ex-NFL player or a Russian bruiser would for viewers torn between free fights or a repeat of “Spider-Man 3.” These are not facts that thrill me, but they are what they are.

The dark horse of this predicament is Dan Henderson, who has gotten several positive audience pops in recent months at Strikeforce events and is coming off a sensationally hyped performance at UFC 100. Certainly a portion of that show’s 1.5 million pay-per-view households will remember Henderson annihilating Michael Bisping and tune in to see what he attempts to obliterate next.

Unlike the UFC, which can sell low-watt cards based solely on that acronym, competing promotional entities are heavily reliant on personalities. When Kimbo Slice skipped EliteXC’s second CBS telecast, ratings went down 40 percent from the inaugural installment. Aoki talking trash in Japanese is probably not going to burn up the Nielsen boxes.  (ESPN)

UFC Helping State with Census Count

The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Nevada’s secretary of state are teaming for a different kind of fight: The 2010 census.

Wednesday afternoon at the Grant Sawyer State Office Building in downtown Las Vegas, Secretary of State Ross Miller announced a partnership between Nevada and the UFC to promote awareness for the upcoming census.

“UFC is Nevada’s sports franchise,” Miller said. “And they are the best partner you could have when trying to accomplish something as significant as this.”

During the press conference, Miller unveiled the state’s advertising campaign, which heavily targets the 18- to 30-year-old demographic, one that has shown to be less likely to fill out the forms.

“It’s hard to overstate the important of the census to Nevada,” Miller said.

According to Miller, completing the 2010 census means about $917 of federal funding per person each year, which translates to almost $10,000 a person over the 10-year time period.

“Obviously anything in Nevada is UFC territory,” Griffin said. “We take it that way and the more funding for Nevada, the more for the UFC.”  (Las Vegas Sun)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“You won’t see a Silva versus Jones fight while Silva is under contract with me,” White said Tuesday. “I don’t want to say anything bad about Roy Jones, I like Roy Jones and was a fan of his, but he mattered like fifteen years ago. He’s not anywhere near the best boxer in the world. He must’ve spent all his money.”

…”I could do it, make it huge, make money, but I could have done a fight like this when we were bleeding money [in the early 2000s],” White said. “The fight would make some money, but it hurts MMA in the long term. We don’t do that because we love the sport. That’s a Pride or K-1 matchup. It’s not what we do.” (Dana White on signing Roy Jones Jr. in 2009, CBS Sports)

Who Should Toney Fight?

Posted in booking, MMA Payout, UFC on March 4th, 2010 by MMAPayout

Mike Chiappetta of MMAFighting.com asks the question, who might get the first shot at the UFC’s newest light heavyweight signee – and former boxing champion – James Toney.

There is a set of assumptions we can make about a prospective opponent. First, rather than risk a promising young fighter losing to Toney and losing momentum, it’s safe to assume the UFC will try to match him with a veteran. So guys like Cain Velasquez and Todd Duffee are probably out. Second, the promotion will pair him with a name fighter. At 41 years old, Toney’s days in MMA are limited, and the UFC knows they need to cash in immediately. Third, Toney won’t get a gimme in his first time out; he wants a big payday, and he knows there are only a few opponents who will bring it. Finally, weight class doesn’t matter. I have a feeling Toney’s first time out may well be a catch weight.

Payout Perspective:

Chiappetta goes on to list a handful of names that he thinks might fit the bill according to his criteria above: Liddell, Couture, Slice, A. Silva, Rampage Jackson, etc. Those are all good picks. However, I have to disagree with the notion that the UFC shouldn’t throw a young buck in there with Toney.

If the fight were at heavyweight – which now seems unlikely – my first choice would be Cain Velasquez, because he’d take Toney to the ground and immediately pound him into submission. It would be the perfect set-up for the next contender to the winner of Lesnar-Mir/Carwin and add a lot of fuel to the momentum of the UFC’s growing heavyweight division.

If the fight happens at light heavyweight, I’d love to see the UFC select Jon Jones. He’s got the perfect set of tools to dismantle someone like Toney; long reach, good kicks, and superb greco-roman. He’d ragdoll Toney. In the process, the UFC would again be helping to put over another one of its young and most promising stars.

Jones has a fight on March 21st, but should he win that bout it would make a lot of business sense to slot a Jones-Toney bout in behind Lesnar’s return in early July to create what would undoubtedly be the UFC’s top grossing PPV of all time.

And the reason I favor Jones/Velasquez moves beyond just hyping young stars. There’s also something to be said for the amount of risk the UFC is exposing itself to by matching up legendary fighters like Couture or Liddell – whom are over the hill – against a guy like Toney with a punchers chance. If Couture or Liddell were to lose, it would resonate far more with the casual sports viewing public. If Jones or Velasquez were to lose it would have much less of an impact on the reputation of the sport. Yes, the UFC might be down a future star, but if either of those guys lose to Toney, they might not be what we think they are anyways.

Note: You may be thinking, “Jeez, it’s risky no matter the direction the UFC takes,” and I happen to agree.

Make no bones about it, this is a risky play on the UFC’s behalf; calculated, but risky. They could reap significant rewards, or it could backfire and really rip a hole in the organization’s – and by virtue of that, the sport’s – credibility.

Is it a risk the UFC needs to take right now? I’m undecided.

WEC Coming to Canada

Posted in booking, MMA Payout, WEC on March 4th, 2010 by MMAPayout

Keith Greinke of TopMMANews is reporting that World Extreme Cagefighting has officially booked June 20th for a show in Calgary, Alberta.

As reported in January, Zuffa was planning to bring the WEC to Calgary this summer. At the time, WEC Vice-President Peter Dropick said, “It looks like we’re going to Calgary.” Now, Top MMA News has confirmed that the WEC has booked June 20th for their Canadian debut in Calgary in the Stampede Corral.

Calgary Combative Sports Commission chairperson Shirley Stunzi confirmed this to Top MMA News saying, “I can advise you now that WEC has officially booked June 20 in Calgary for their event.”

Payout Perspective:

In most Canadian markets – Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, etc. – mixed martial arts is quickly becoming the second most popular sport behind the country’s national religion of hockey. The WEC in Calgary will be an absolute boom for the promotion. Moreover, it’ll likely open Zuffa’s eyes to the potential of the Great White North for hosting future events; Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Halifax are all ripe markets for WEC or even UFN shows.

However, it’s important to note that promotions often book many different dates and venues just to cover their bases. Until the WEC officially announces this event, nothing is guaranteed.

Republicans Leverage UFC Events to Boost Fundraising

Posted in MMA Payout, politics, UFC on March 4th, 2010 by MMAPayout

Ben Smith of POLITICO reports in an exclusive that the Republican National Committee is using live events like those of the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Professional Bull Riding to attract younger donors.

A major Republican donor described the state of the RNC’s relationship with major donors as “disastrous,” with veteran givers beginning to abandon the committee, which is becoming increasingly reliant on small donors.

The party’s average contribution in 2009, according to the document, was just $40, and the shift toward a financial reliance on the grassroots may help explain Steele’s increasingly strident tone toward the Obama Administration.

While the crude portrayal of Obama may be – as Steele ‘s spokesman put it – “unacceptable,” other elements of the presentation may be of equal interest to close political observers.

The RNC plans to raise $8.6 million from major donors alone in 2010, less than 10% of its total 2009 fundraising take, which was primarily from small donors.”

The center of that plan is an extensive, and colorful, schedule of events. Along with traditional fundraisers with conservative luminaries including Weekly Standard Editor Bill Kristol and former presidential candidate Steve Forbes, the party plans to raise $80,000 for a trip to London to meet David Cameron, the British Conservative Party leader, on September 17.

The RNC’s “Young Eagles” – younger major donors and the only group, according to a major donor, continuing to pull its weight financially – are invited to a “professional bull riding event” in October, expected to raise $50,000, and to a no-holds-barred Ultimate Fighting Championship fight in Las Vegas the same month, expected to raise $60,000.

The RNC’s aim, according to one section of the document: “Putting the Fun Back in FUNdraising.”

Payout Perspective:

We try to avoid national politics on the website as best we can, but the explicit mention of the UFC being used as a fundraising tool is certainly interesting. The RNC is using the UFC as a fundraising tool ostensibly because it provides them with an appealing event for young, wealthier individuals – something that might be seen to support some of the more recent MMA demographic studies we’ve seen.

It’s funny how things change, isn’t it? Just a few short years ago, many of these same politicians were more than willing to declare the UFC as foul, barbaric, and inhumane.

FYI: Dana White has been a supporter of the Republican Party in the past: donating to John Ensign in 2005 and most recently Chael Sonnen’s run for office in Oregon. However, the Fertitta’s, Station Casinos, and Zuffa have made several contributions to both major parties over the years.

James Toney Signs Non-Exclusive Contract with UFC

He’s one of the premier boxers of the last 25 years, a future Hall of Famer who has won world titles in three weight classes while taking on a Who’s Who of the sport, including fellow champions Evander Holyfield, John Ruiz, Hasim Rahman, Vassiliy Jirov, Roy Jones Jr., Mike McCallum, Iran Barkley, and Michael Nunn. But there is one more mountain left to climb for James “Lights Out” Toney, and that’s to show if he can defeat the mixed martial arts warriors of the UFC®.

So later this year, UFC President Dana White is prepared to give Toney his shot, signing the boxing superstar to a multi-fight contract this week to compete in the UFC.

“A lot of pro boxers have made a lot of noise about how they would do in mixed martial arts, but nobody on the level of a James Toney has been willing to back up his talk,” said White. “He’s a legend whose boxing record speaks for itself, and he’s a guy who I’ve got a lot of respect for. Now he’s got every intention of matching that success in MMA, and I think he’s got the right attitude – let’s see if he can do it.”  (MMAPayout Perspective)

UFC president insists Toney signing isn’t ‘freak show’

The Ultimate Fighting Championship didn’t become a billion-dollar enterprise by having its executives take crazy risks. The company was built methodically, with the larger goal always in mind.

But on Wednesday, the bus swerved sharply in a different direction when UFC president Dana White confirmed that the company had signed boxer James Toney to a multi-fight contract.

“We threw the kitchen sink at Brock when he came in. Are we going to do that same thing with James? I don’t know. To be 100 percent honest with you, all [expletive] aside, I haven’t thought it out.

“I like James Toney. He’s one of the greatest boxers ever. I have tremendous respect for him. He said he wanted to fight in the UFC and I was interested. Now he’s here and I have to figure out what to do with him. What we won’t do is make a freak show out of it. I’d be the first to scream if someone else did that, so I’m not going to do it.”

“Hey, I don’t want this to be seen as a joke, and it’s not like Herschel Walker or Canseco or any of those guys. James Toney is a fighter. The worst thing anyone can ever say to me is that they were watching one of my fights and they changed the channel. That’s why I’ll never put [expletive] fights on.”

For the first time, the UFC will have to manage the schedule of one of its fighters with someone else, since Toney’s contract allows him to box. There are a lot of variables that are going to make this a difficult proposition.  (Yahoo! Sports)

In October 2006, former UFC champion Randy Couture said he was called by the promotion with a potential bout against the pro boxer that never came to fruition.  (Sherdog)

UFC 115 In Jeopardy, Moving to Counter Strikeforce on 4/17?

The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s first trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada may not happen as quickly as planned. According to a report from MMA commentator and analyst Paul Lazenby, the city has yet to implement regulations to promote mixed martial arts professionally and may not do so for at least two months.

Subsequent reports have suggested that the UFC may already be looking into other options, including a rumoured UFC Fight Night event on April 17th that would go head-to-head with Strikeforce on CBS.

As reported on Lazenby’s website, PaulLazenby.com, a meeting was held last night with North Vancouver Athletic Commission Chair Mike Pattenaude, Assistant Director of Vancouver’s Licences and Animal Control division Tom Hammel and new Vancouver Athletic Commission Chair Mirko Mladenovic. The discussion led to the discovery that necessary regulations that would allow professional mixed martial arts events to take place in the city have not been implemented.

Hammel was said to have indicated that it could be at least two months before the situation was resolved, which would leave the UFC in a difficult position if they opted to continue moving forward with the planned UFC 115 event in June. Despite the passing of a two-year trial period for MMA by the Vancouver City Council, concerns remain regarding legal and financial liability.  (MMARising)

New UFC gym to open in Rosemead, opposed by Councilman

A new fitness gym half owned by the mixed martial arts promoter Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will open off the 10 freeway in three months, over the objections of some city officials.

Though UFC’s claim to fame is popularizing the often bloody combat fighting sport of MMA, the gym will not allow any such fighting, company officials said.

Instead, they said it will provide members a unique fitness workout, attract an audience that may not otherwise exercise and help reduce obesity in the community.

“This is not a fighting gym,” general manager Ryan Junk said.

But that explanation has not appeased councilman Gary Taylor. Taylor worries that the gym will lead to on-site fights and train future fighters in what he calls a “brutal” sport.

“Watching those fights was ridiculous. They would hit somebody in the head, knocking them to the ground, then pounce on them and use both fists to beat their head while they are on the ground. I don’t understand that kind of fighting,” Taylor said at a recent city council meeting on the subject.

As the name suggests, competitors in mixed martial arts face off using a combination of fighting techniques, from muay thai kick-boxing to Brazilian jiu jitsu to wrestling. When UFC first emerged in the early 1990s, it faced serious backlash because of its levels of violence. It has since incorporated stricter rules, allowing it to become more mainstream.  (MMAWeekly)

Fedor, Strikeforce and the Travails of Non-Exclusive Contracts

When Scott Coker and Strikeforce signed Fedor Emelianenko, it was heralded by the media as the promotion’s first shot at the UFC in a newly waged promotional war.

Momentum seemed to be building. But now, just one fight into a multi-fight deal, Emelianenko’s M-1 team is seeking to renegotiate the terms of the contract.

In an exclusive fight deal favored by the UFC, a fighter would have little leverage in such a situation. As Randy Couture found when he challenged the UFC in court back in 2007, such a scenario would likely have left him mired in legal limbo for years. After months of sitting on the sidelines waiting for the slow wheels of justice to turn, Couture (whose goal, ironically enough was to fight Emelianenko) decided against a drawn-out legal battle and found a way to make peace with the UFC. Couture might have eventually won the case; he simply could not afford the time to find out.

So Strikeforce is hardly the first organization to have a fighter hold out; it’s just that the circumstances with non-exclusive deals tilt the leverage away from the organization and towards the fighter — or at least a fighter with the clout of Emelianenko.

Strikeforce’s willingness to free certain fighters for possible paydays in non-U.S. promotions is an athlete-friendly gesture, but can now work against them. Should negotiations get ugly (and there’s nothing to suggest they’ve yet devolved to that level) Emelianenko can simply walk away — or threaten to walk away — to a promotion such as DREAM or Sengoku, or even to fight under his own M-1 banner, as long as it’s overseas (MMAFighting)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“We’ll figure something out,” White said. “I’m not really sure. Here’s the thing with James: We were sitting around finishing the deal and talking and he told me that he’d been talking to Strikeforce. He said they were talking to him about a fight with Herschel Walker. James said to me, ‘Do you know what I’d do to that [expletive]?’ He looked at me and said, ‘You know, I have a lot of pride and I’d never do anything to embarrass myself. I’m a fighter. I want to fight. And don’t ever underestimate me.’ ”  (Dana White on signing James Toney, Yahoo)
