Monday morning scrap: Strikeforce and Sengoku weekend in review

Posted in MMA Mania, Sengoku 11, Strikeforce, Strikeforce Challenger Series on November 9th, 2009 by MMA Mania

Fans of mixed martial arts were once again treated to an action-packed weekend chock full of fights thanks to Strikeforce cranking out back-to-back shows as well as World Victory Road putting forth a bevy of top stars in the heat of battle for Sengoku: “Eleventh Battle.”

Strikeforce held its first CBS prime time mixed martial arts event on Saturday night (Nov. 7) from the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates, Ill., and lit up the Internet message boards with its “Fedor vs. Rogers” main event.

Did we see the greatest living mixed martial artist defeat a tough-as-nails heavyweight prospect? Or a bloated relic getting spoon-fed a former tire mechanic?

In addition to their heavyweight brouhaha, Jake Shields captured the promotion’s middleweight title, Gegard Mousasi won without defending his belt, and Fabricio Werdum took one step closer to an eventual showdown with “The Last Emperor.”

And Strikeforce did it all just one day after holding their “Challengers” event in Fesno, Calif., which once again saw lightweight veteran Jorge Gurgel abandon his ground game only to be outpointed on his feet — this time by Billy Evangelista.

Those MMA fans looking for some International flavor got their fill with the HDNet broadcast of Sengoku “Eleventh Battle” from Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan. While much of the talk surrounded Mamed Khalidov’s upset win over Jorge Santiago, international superstars Akihiro Gono and Kevin Randleman were also in action.

In cased you missed any or all of it — or just want to keep the discussion alive — below are links to all the major storylines coming out of all three events.

Let’s get to it.

Strikeforce Challengers: ‘Evangelista vs Gurgel’ recap and post-fight discussion

Posted in Billy Evangelista, Jorge Gurgel, MMA Mania, Strikeforce, Strikeforce Challenger Series on November 7th, 2009 by MMA Mania

Strikeforce’s weekend of mixed martial arts action is officially halfway over as “Challenger Series IV” is now in the books from the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California.

Former UFC lightweight fighter and jiu-jitsu stud Jorge Gurgel squared off against hometown favorite Billy Evangelista in the night’s main event, and as expected it was an all out war.

Gurgel is known for abandoning his ground game in favor of a more entertaining stand up fight, which usually means a good scrap for the fans and a close loss on the scorecards for him, which is exactly what happened again tonight.

Evangelista traded blow for blow with the Cincinnati resident and used timely takedowns to squeak out a judge’s decision.

Afterward, the undefeated hometown winner was asked how he felt about a potential match up with Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson, and he surprisingly didn’t seem too warm on the idea, stating that he and Josh were friends but he would do whatever Strikeforce wanted.

We’ll have to wait and see how the Strikeforce brass handles that scenario, but a Josh Thomson vs. Billy Evangelista title fight certainly sounds like it would be a fun one to watch.

In the night’s co-main event, heavyweight Shane Del Rosario overcame an early knockdown by Brandon Cash “Money” to come back and win by submission (omoplata). At one point the onslaught from Cash appeared to be swaying the referee to step in for the stoppage, but Del Rosario hung in there and recovered nicely for the win.

He’ll certainly be a player in the crowded Strikeforce heavyweight division moving forward.

“Ultimate Fighter” castoff Jesse Taylor made his second appearance on a Strikeforce card in 2009, and for the second time he came up on the losing end. Luke Rockhold — a very talented wrestler and jiu-jitsu practitioner — fended off a powerful wrestling attack from “JT Money,” who came out of the gates looking for the takedown. Rockhold eventually worked his way into a dominate position and finished Taylor off with his patented rear naked choke, his fourth in a row.

Merritt Warren and Zoila Frausto were also winners on the Showtime televised portion of the card, defeating Ousmane Thomas Diagne and Elisha Hellspur by first round heel hook and unanimous decision, respectively.

That’s a wrap from the Save Mart Center in Fresno.

The fifth installment of the “Challenger Series” is slated for November 20 at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. That card is set to feature a main event between undefeated two-time All-American wrestler from the University of Missouri, Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley and Kansas City’s own Rudy Bears. The female version of the main event from UFC 105 is also scheduled for the card as Kim “Sugar Free” Couture squares off with Kerry Vera.

Under card fighter, Chris Culley, came in more than two pounds heavy for his featherweight contest against Maurice Eazel. He’ll have some additional time to shed the excess weight or he’ll likely have to forfeit a portion of his purse to Eazel.

Strikeforce Challengers ‘Evangelista vs Gurgel’ preview and quick picks

Posted in Billy Evangelista, Jorge Gurgel, MMA Mania, Strikeforce Challenger Series on November 4th, 2009 by MMA Mania

Strikeforce Challengers IV is just a couple of days away from kick-starting an action packed weekend of mixed martial arts courtesy of the San Jose based promotion. “Evangelista vs. Gurgel” is all set for the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California, and the main card will air live on the premium cable network, Showtime, beginning at 11 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 6.

Strikeforce Challenger Series serves as a proving ground to promote up-and-coming (and lesser known) fighters. The events are similar to what Elite XC used to promote with its SHO XC: “Challenger Series” on Showtime.

The featured fight of the night is a battle between undefeated wrestling and Muay Thai stud Billy Evangelista and UFC veteran Jorge Gurgel. Undefeated heavyweights Brandon Cash “Money” and Shane Del Rosario are also set to clash in the co-main event.

Ultimate Fighter (TUF) castoff Jesse Taylor is also scheduled to make his Strikeforce debut on the Showtime telecast, and there will be plenty of other promising fighters from the promotion’s roster in action as well.

To help get you better prepared, we’ve given our analysis and predictions for the three most anticipated bouts on the main card that are set to hit the Showtime airwaves Friday night.

Check it out below:

Billy Evangelista (9-0) vs. Jorge Gurgel (13-5)

Evangelista – a wrestler and Muay Thai striker – last fought in May in the main event at Challenger Series I against BJ Penn trainee “Iron” Mike Aina where he was handed the first loss of his career thanks to a disqualification stemming from an illegal knee to his downed opponent’s head.

However, the California State Athletic Commission reviewed the footage of the errant strike and later deemed that the blow was unintentionally thrown and that it landed on Aina’s shoulder area and not his head. Therefore the fight was changed to a “No Contest.”

So, the Fresno resident will not only be looking to remain undefeated when he takes on Gurgel in the main event of Challenger Series IV right in his own backyard, but he’ll also be looking to redeem himself in front of his hometown fans from a controversial ending his last time out.

He’ll have his hands full with the jiu jitsu specialist though. Gurgel made his debut for the promotion in June on the Challenger Series II card, fighting outside of the UFC for the first time in three years, handing Conor “Hurricane” Heun only the third loss of his career with a unanimous decision.

Gurgel is an accomplished jiu jitsu player who has trained some of the best fighters in the world at his craft. However, he’s infamous for neglecting his trade and instead slugging it out with his opponents when he actually gets into the cage to fight.

It’s a strange thing that has baffled his fans for years now, but nobody is complaining because it usually leads to a “fight of the night” candidate, even though he has come up on the losing end more times than not using that strategy.

Strikeforce fans can probably expect more of the same in this fight from Gurgel who has even said this week that he isn’t the type of fighter who will pursue the takedown.

Evangelista, on the other hand, has certainly been known for pursuing takedowns in his fights. He has some nice stand up skills and even some decent jiu jitsu, but he tends to rely on his bread and butter, which is his wrestling.

In this fight, however, his strategy will likely be to avoid Gurgel’s dangerous submission game and keep the action on the feet, meaning the Strikeforce fans are in store for one heck of a stand up battle.

Gurgel doesn’t have great finishing ability in the striking department, so a win for him would likely come on the judge’s scorecards. For Evangelista though, he has 4 career wins by (technical) knockout, and he’ll surely be looking for a fifth on Friday night.

Don’t count on that happening though since Gurgel has also never been knocked out in a fight.

This fight has judge’s decision written all over it, and it’s going to be a tough one to call. While Gurgel’s striking background isn’t out of this world, his in-fight experience is another story. His time in the UFC was filled with back and forth stand up battles that have prepared him for fights just like this.

He’ll be ready to throw down with Evangelista, and I think he’ll do just enough to score the win over the hometown fighter.

Final Prediction: Jorge Gurgel via unanimous decision.

Shane Del Rosario (8-0) vs. Brandon Cash “Money” (5-0)

Like Evangelista, Cash is another Fresno resident who will be fighting in his hometown. And like Evangelista, he’s another hometown fighter that I’ll be picking against on this card.

Don’t get me wrong, Cash is a beast of a man who is coming off probably the best performance of his career in dropping Steve Gavin with punches less than 30 seconds into their fight back in Feburary. He always comes in looking to end his opponent’s night early, and so far he’s been pretty successful in doing so.

However, Shane Del Rosario is more experienced, he’s fought better competition, he’s more technical, he’s trained with many of the top fighters in the world, including Brandon Vera, Rampage Jackson and others, and he’s been demolishing his opposition. In fact, only one of his eight opponents (Carl Seumanutafa) has survived the first round with him, and even he was put down early in the second round.

Both of these guys have made it clear that they’re coming into this fight to knock each other out early, which means this one likely won’t make it a full five minute round.

Look for Del Rosario to counter punch everything Cash throws at him with a more technical and effective variety of strikes. He’s been talking about fighting smarter and not just trying to knock his opponent’s head off right from the opening bell.

He knows Cash is going to be looking to hit the MMA lottery with a big punch, so as long as he can stick to what he’s been doing in training, his technique and power should prevail over Cash “Money’s” raw aggression.

Final Prediction: Shane Del Roario via technical knockout in round one

Jesse “JT Money” Taylor (13-4) vs. Luke Rockhold (5-1)

Rockhold is coming off a super-impressive first round submission win over a very talented Corey Devela on the Challenger Series II card. That win opened a lot of eyes in the MMA community, and now he’ll get another chance to score a win over a well known fighter in “JT Money.”

However, Taylor is very strong and he executes the ground and pound strategy extremely well in his fights. He had some trouble in doing so during his most recent fight with Jay Hieron, but before that, the “TUF” castoff was riding a 7 fight winning streak that saw him win 4 times by rear naked choke.

Look for that trend to continue in this fight as Rockhold could have a difficult time dealing with “JT Money’s” strength.

Even though he has finished nearly 77 percent of his opponents before the final bell, Taylor has been accused of laying and praying in the past. If that means takedowns and dominate positions, then expect some laying and praying in this one as well.

That type of strategy should wear Rockhold down enough for Taylor to score another rear naked choke finish in the later rounds.

Final Prediction: Jesse “JT Money” Taylor via third round submission.

That’s a wrap.

Remember that MMAmania.com will provide live coverage of the main card beginning with the Showtime telecast at 11 p.m. ET as well as up to the minute results of the under card action beginning at around 9 p.m.

Check in early and often, it should be an exciting night of fights.

Patience, grasshopper: Gurgel will grapple in due time

Props: MMA Fanhouse

Quoteworthy:

“If I made a dollar, man, if anybody asks me ‘Why don’t you use your jiu-jitsu?’ … It can be a 10-year-old kid in my gym to a 75-year-old man in a hair salon, the guy at the gas station, I’m always going to be asked the same question, ‘Why don’t you use your jiu-jitsu?’ And just, everything comes in due time. I have a lot of confidence in my gym. I have a lot of confidence in my standup skills, and I enjoy trading punches. People have the misconception that I do this just to please promoters. It’s nothing to do with that. I do it cause I enjoy it. I enjoy fighting standing, and I’m not the type of guy who will pursue the takedown. If the fight goes to the ground, I’m happy there, I’m comfortable there, I’m just not going to pursue the takedown all the time. I’m sure my career is far from over, so in due time, everybody is going to see me work on the ground. So patience, grasshopper. Patience.”

Former UFC lightweight Jorge Gurgel responds to critics who don’t understand why the Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt continually abandons his ground game in favor of an all out slugfest. Gurgel went on to win a unanimous decision on all three judges scorecards in his first appearance under the Strikeforce banner when he outpointed Connor Huen in an absolute war back at the  June 19 “Challengers” event. Will he be able to replicate that performance against the undefeated Billy Evangelista at Strikeforce Challengers on Nov. 6?

Tyron Woodley vs Rudy Bears set to headline Strikeforce ‘Challengers’ in Kansas City on Nov. 20

woodly_bears_strikeforce

NEW YORK (Oct. 15, 2009)-Fresh off a sparkling victory on Sept. 25, budding superstar and two-time All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri, undefeated Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley (4-0) of St. Louis, will come back on Friday, Nov. 20, when he faces dangerous Rudy Bears (13-5) of Kansas City in the featured bout of an outstanding Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) card at historic Memorial Hall in Kansas City.

The highly regarded Woodley will be making his main event debut in the scheduled three-round, 5-minute welterweight (170 pounds) bout that will be one of five televised on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

Non-televised bouts in an event presented by San Jose, Calif.-based STRIKEFORCE, in association with Shamrock Promotions, will begin at 8 p.m. CT. Doors open at 7:15 CT. Tickets, starting at $35, are available at the Memorial Hall ticket office, online at Ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

In other SHOWTIME fights, also slated for three, 5-minute rounds:

Bobby Voelker (20-7), Kansas City, vs. Erik Apple (10-1), Newport Beach, Calif. (170 pounds); Aaron Rosa (12-2), San Antonio, Tex., vs. Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante (7-2), Rio De Janeiro (205 pounds); and in 135-pound women’s fights, Kerry Vera (1-0), San Diego, Calif., vs. Kim “Sugar Free” Couture (1-1), Las Vegas, Nev., and undefeated Sarah Kaufman (10-0), Victoria, British Columbia, vs. Takayo Hashi (12-1), Japan.

In his last outing, Woodley registered an impressive second-round submission (armbar) over former Tito Ortiz protégé, Zach Light fight at the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event in Tulsa, Okla. A popular up-and-comer, the 5-foot-9, 27-year-old Woodley, the 11th of 13 children raised mostly by a single mother, has won all his fights by submission.

The streaking Bears has won six in a row — five inside the distance — and eight of his last nine. Bears, who is making his STRIKEFORCE Challengers debut, is coming off a second-round TKO (punches) over Brendon Seguin on Aug. 28.

The promising Feijao, who has won all seven of his outings by stoppage, will be trying to rebound from one of the year’s biggest upsets. In an off-TV match last June 6, he lost by second-round TKO (punches) to Mike Kyle in St. Louis.

“That was a very disappointing night, but I’ve put it behind me,” Feijao said. “I appreciate this opportunity and I’ll be ready to go on Nov. 20. I owe it to STRIKEFORCE and the fans to show what I can really do.”

Rosa, who turned pro in November 2005, won his initial 10 starts before losing two in a row. He has won his last two fights, including a first-round submission (rear-naked choke) over Anthony Ruiz on May 15, 2009, in Fresno, Calif. Eight of Rosa’s 12 career wins have come by stoppage.

The Feijao-Rosa scrap smacks with importance. The winner could be in line to face STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi.

Voelker has won three of his last four starts and six of eight. A pro since February 2006, more than half of Voelker’s victories (12) have been the result of knockout or TKO.

Apple will be appearing for the first time before a paying audience since scoring perhaps a career-best triumph – a second-round submission over promising Matt Makowski on Aug. 28, 2008. Apple’s pro debut came in April 2003 and he competed regularly through August 2006. But he has fought only twice since. His lone defeat came in his effort before last to Brock Larson in March 2007.

Couture, the former wife of MMA legend Randy Couture, will be making her eagerly anticipated STRIKEFORCE and 2009 debut. After losing her first fight, Couture registered a 1:44, first-round TKO over Lina Kvokov on Nov. 21, 2008.

Vera also is seeking her second consecutive victory. She scored a three-round unanimous decision over Leslie Smith on May 15, 2009.

The undefeated Kaufman has won eight of her 10 starts by knockout. In her last outing, she outpointed tough Shayna “The Queen Of Spades” Baszler across three (five-minute) hard-fought rounds on the June 19 STRIKEFORCE Challengers card. A dancer since the age of two, the exciting, hard-hitting Kaufman also owns a points victory over promising Miesha Tate.

Hashi, a pro since April 2004, will enter the cage with an eight-fight winning streak.

Strikeforce Challengers: Rafael Cavalcante vs Aaron Rosa in the works for Nov. 20

Posted in Aaron Rosa, MMA Mania, Rafael Feijao Cavalcante, Strikeforce, Strikeforce Challenger Series on October 13th, 2009 by MMA Mania

Former Elite XC light heavyweight star Rafael Cavalcante (7-2) will once again attempt to notch his first win under the Strikeforce banner when he takes on Aaron Rosa (12-2) at the “Challengers” event scheduled for Nov. 20 in Kansas City, according to Fighters.com.

Verbal agreements are in place and contracts are expected to be distributed shortly.

“Feijao” made his much-anticipated debut at last June’s “Lawler vs. Shields” Strikeforce show, eventually succumbing to the aggression and relentless strikes of opponent Mike Kyle.

The uncharacteristically plump Brazilian was winded by the end of the first frame and likely suffered from his year-long absence from the cage. Nevertheless, he’ll get a chance to right the ship in late November.

Rosa, like Cavalcante, was housed under the Pro Elite roof from 2007-08. The former Renegades Extreme Fighting (REF) star cut his teeth under the Sho XC division, posting a 1-3 record with losses to Jared Hamman and Jaime Fletcher.

He got back to his winning ways in the summer of 2008 with a TKO win over Ron Fields at Adrenaline MMA before making it two in a row when he submitted Anthony Ruiz at the inaugural Challengers event on May 15.

The Nov. 20 Strikeforce Challengers card is expected to feature a women’s bout pitting MMA first ladies Kim Couture and Kerry Vera against one another at the historic Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on this developing fight card.

Strikeforce books Shane Del Rosario vs Brandon Cash for Nov. 6 ‘Challengers’ event

Posted in MMA Mania, Strikeforce Challenger Series on October 9th, 2009 by MMA Mania

Former WBO Muay Thai champion Shane Del Rosario (8-0) and undefeated War Gods veteran Brandon Cash (5-0), are scheduled to meet at Strikeforce Challengers “Evangelista vs. Gurgel,” which is slated for the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., on Nov. 6.

After steamrolling his way through the ShoXC “Elite Challenger Series” in 2008, Del Rosario was acquired by Strikeforce in the Pro Elite sale earlier this year.

The Team Oyama standout was forced to sit on the sidelines to nurse a broken hand at the end of 2008, but quickly returned to action back in January, barreling over any and all competition under the M-1 banner and remaining perfect in three appearances.

All eight of his victories have been stoppages — one by submission and seven by technical knockout. And of those bouts, only one has seen the second round.

Standing in his way is the also-debuting Brandon Cash.

The former wrestling standout out of Buchannan High is coming off an impressive technical knockout win over Steve Gavin at Palace Fighting Championships in February of this year.

Cash is known for his wrestling but hasn’t let his mat pedigree stop him from ending four of his five fights by way of TKO, including a perfect 3-0 run in the War Gods promotion.

Strikeforce Challengers 4 is set to be headlined by a lightweight battle between seven fight UFC veteran Jorge Gurgel and undefeated Fresno resident Billy Evangelista. Jesse “JT” Money and Luke Rockhold will also compete on the televised portion of the card.
