Main Card

BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez – Of all BJ Penn’s challengers as lightweight champion, I think Diego Sanchez has the greatest chance of taking the title.

I still think BJ wins this fight, but have to concede that this matchup will be the toughest test BJ has faced as title holder.

Sanchez has good striking power and quick hands that he should be able to put to good use against Penn. Penn has shown throughout his career that he has a chin made of granite and Diego probably knows he can’t look to knock BJ out.

Diego needs to put heavy pressure on BJ and attempt to land as many strikes as possible, both to the head and to the body, in an effort to wear the champion down.

While BJ Penn has improved his conditioning and cardio significantly in his past few fights, that area of his game is still his weakest and we saw GSP wear down Penn and force him to throw in the towel. While Diego is no where as big as GSP, he is a former welterweight and does carry a good amount of muscle.

I look for Penn to attack this fight with the same gameplan he used against Kenny Florian. Penn feels confident that he can stand and trade strikes with anybody, but I think BJ will look to take this fight to the ground sometime during the second round.

Sanchez is a strong wrestler, but BJ’s grappling skills are too good for Diego to defend. I see this fight ending by submission sometime in the third or fourth round.

Winner: BJ Penn

Frank Mir vs. Cheick Kongo – Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo are two heavyweight fighter’s that are almost a liability to the UFC, in my opinion. Both men are solid heavyweights, but neither is truly at the “top of his class” enough to become and remain the heavyweight champion for any period of time.

Kongo has a good striking and kicking game, but his ground game is still completely lacking even after 20 professional fights, including 10 in the UFC.

Frank Mir’s ground game is top notch, and he even has started to show some good signs of improvement on the feet in recent matches. Mir just has never been able to get over the hurdle and become a huge force in the division.

Personally, I’m pretty ambivalent about this matchup and don’t know what the winner really gains out of the matchup. A title shot probably isn’t on the line, and both men will undoubtedly remain with the promotion.

Look for Mir to test the hands early on, but wisen up and submit Kongo for the victory.

Winner: Frank Mir

Jon Fitch vs. Mike Pierce – The training camp for UFC 107 was something of a circus for Jon Fitch. Originally slated to fight Ricardo Almeida, Fitch had to switch to preparing for Thiago Alves when Almedia withdrew. The preparations for Alves were short-lived however, as Alves also pulled out leaving Fitch with a fight against Mike Pierce.

I don’t think the revolving door of opponent’s hurt Fitch’s preparations at all, however, and I don’t expect this fight to be much of a problem for Fitch. While Mike Pierce is a solid fighter and has some decent power in his hands, his matchup here with Fitch is more about finding a way to keep Fitch on the fight card rather than matching up two equal opponents.

Expect Fitch to have his way with Pierce on the ground and win via unanimous decision or submission.

Winner: Jon Fitch

Kenny Florian vs. Clay Guida – Most MMA fans are looking forward to this lightweight matchup between Kenny Florian and Clay Guida almost as much as the night’s main event.

Both Florian and Guida consistently bring a high-energy gameplan into the Octagon and this fight could be an excellent battle.

Florian recently changed up his training camp and has moved away from Mark Dellegrotte as Sityodtong and it will be interesting to see if the change of scenery has improved Florian’s game at all.

Florian’s striking and Muay Thai game are better than Guida’s, simply because he is the far more accurate and technical striker. Guida should be able to out wrestle Florian on the mat, but Florian has the strong guard game. If Guida can avoid Florian’s guard he should be able to do some damage, but avoiding Florian’s guard isn’t an easy task.

I don’t really see either fighter look to take this fight to the ground however, and I fully expect to see a three round striking battle. If Guida can get in close and frustrate Florian with the clinch in the same way he did to Nate Diaz, then Guida will walk away the victor. If he can’t, look for Florian to win via decision.

Winner: Clay Guida

Paul Buentello vs. Stefan Struve – MMA heavyweight journeyman Paul Buentello gets another crack at the Octagon. Buentello is by no means a top prospec, but is more of a middle-of-the-pack type of heavyweight. Why the UFC chose to bring “The Headhunter” back into the fold, I’m not quite sure, but the matchup against Stefan Struve will prove an interesting one.

Buentello can still pack a solid punch, and should have the easy advantage on the feet if he can figure out a way to contend with Struve’s huge height advantage.

Struve holds the clear advantage on the ground and has a very good submission game for a man of his size. Stefan needs to use his reach advantage to kick and jab in an effort to keep Buentello at a distance. If Buentello is successful at getting in close and starts landing strikes, look for Struve to take the fight to the ground and attempt to work a submission.

I think Buentello is experienced enough and still has good enough power in his hands that he should be able to keep the fight on the feet and win this fight on points.

Winner: Paul Buentello

Undercard

Alan Belcher vs. Wilson GouveiaWinner: Wilson Guiveia
Matt Wiman vs. Shane NelsonWinner: Matt Wiman
Johny Hendricks vs. Ricardo FunchWinner: Johny Hendricks
Rousimar Palhares vs. Lucio LinharesWinner: Rousimar Palhares
DeMarques Johnson vs. Edgar GarciaWinner: DeMarques Johnson

UFC 107: Paul Buentello vs Stefan Struve booked with Todd Duffee hurt

Posted in MMA Mania, Paul Buentello, Stefan Struve, UFC 107 on November 11th, 2009 by MMA Mania

Towering up-and-coming heavyweight Stefan Struve (18-3) has officially taken over for the injured Todd Duffee in a bid to throw hands with Paul Buentello (27-10) at UFC 107: “Penn vs. Sanchez” from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 12.

Buentello was last seen using Kiril Sidelnikov’s face as a human punching bag for almost three full rounds at Affliction 2: “Day of Reckoning” earlier this year. “The Headhunter” went on to eventually score a late third round technical knockout over the Russian Sambo specialist, who later tested positive for having banned substances in his system after the contest.

The win was Buentello’s second straight under the Affliction banner — he outpointed last minute replacement Gary Goodridge on the judges scorecards to earn a unanimous decision victory in the promotion’s inaugural show in 2008.

He was originally scheduled to face Gilbert Yvel (after Tim Sylvia got clowned by Ray Mercer) at the Aug.1 “Trilogy” event, but the promotion closed up shop after headliner Josh Barnett got popped for steroids.

His contract was one of many picked from the rubble by Zuffa following Affliction’s demise and his experience inside the Octagon (and out) makes him an immediate factor in this division.

In fact, over his past 13 fights, Buentello has only dropped two contests — one was for a shot at Andrei Arlovski’s UFC heavyweight title back at UFC 55 and the other was at the hands of Alistair Overeem for Strikeforce in November 2007.

But don’t expect the surging Hollander to be impressed by any of that.

The 20-year-old Struve recently signed a four-fight contract with the organization, earning his opportunity to compete on the biggest stage in mixed martial arts with an impressive five-fight win streak in 2008 — all of which came via submission.

Unfortunately, he received a rude welcome from the surging Junior dos Santos, who clobbered “The Skyscraper” into a first round TKO loss at UFC 95. The talented striker quickly rebounded at UFC 99 and refused to let a grisly facial cut stop him from submitting the venerable Denis Stojnic via rear naked choke.

Struve made it-back-to-back wins after disposing of Chase Gormley via first round submission just last month at UFC 104: “Machida vs. Shogun,” and could make a name for himself in the 265-pound weight class by spoiling Buentello’s return.

UFC 107 will feature a main event between lightweight division champion, BJ Penn, defending his title against number one division contender, Diego Sanchez, as well as a heavyweight showdown between former champion Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo.

In addition, a lightweight attraction between stars Kenny Florian and Clay Guida was recently shifted to the card to compensate for the loss of the light heavyweight showdown between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Rashad Evans.

Report: Todd Duffee injury forces him out of UFC 107 fight against Paul Buentello

Posted in MMA Mania, Paul Buentello, Todd Duffee, UFC 107 on November 4th, 2009 by MMA Mania

todd-Duffee

Another one bites the dust.

Undefeated heavyweight powerhouse Todd Duffee has sustained an undisclosed injury, scrapping his upcoming bout against Paul Buentello (27-10) at UFC 107: “Penn vs. Sanchez” from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 12, according to Sherdog.com.

Mike Russow and Stefan Struve are currently the front runners to replace the American Top Team-trained specimen; however, no official announcement regarding Duffee’s injury or potential replacement has been made at this time.

Nonetheless, Duffee is clearly disappointed, saying “[withdrawing] was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make.”

Duffee made his UFC debut at the “Couture vs. Nogueira” pay-per-view back on Aug. 29. The 23-year-old pushed his perfect record to 5-0 with a record-setting seven-second annihilation of Tim Hague.

Prior to that, the Duffee scored an impressive second round technical knockout over Brazilian roadblock, Assuerio Silva, at Jungle Fight 11 last September. The hulking University of Georgia student has ended all five of his professional fights by way of (technical) knockout.

Duffee joins his teammate, Thiago Alves, as well as Brock Lesnar, Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Mark Coleman, Ricardo Almeida, Kurt Pellegrino and Dong Hyun Kim, among others, to get bit by the injury bug.

UFC 107: Jon Fitch vs Mike Pierce booked with Thiago Alves hurt

Posted in Jon Fitch, Mike Pierce, MMA Mania, UFC 107, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on October 31st, 2009 by MMA Mania

The third time will hopefully be the charm for Jon Fitch (19-3) now that up-and-coming welterweight Mike Pierce (10-1) has agreed to step up and face him at UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 12.

Pierce was originally slated to meet Josh Koscheck at UFC Fight Night 20 until “Kos” was promoted to the UFC 106 co-main event opposite Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.

Like Pierce, Fitch was left without an opponent when Ricardo Almeida injured his knee and withdrew from their UFC 106 bout on Nov. 21. Zuffa worked a little magic and booked him in a rematch of former number one welterweight contenders opposite Thiago Alves on Dec. 12; however, “Pitbull” also went down with a knee injury and was forced to bow out.

Fitch returned to the Octagon at UFC 100 to exact revenge against submission specialist Paulo Thiago, taking the contest via unanimous decision. The Brazilian stunned his good friend and American Kickboxing Academy training partner, Josh Koscheck, with a fight-ending first round uppercut at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson” earlier this year.

The Purdue University wrestler now boasts 10 victories for the promotion in 11 attempts. The lone blemish on his record is to welterweight deity Georges “Rush” St. Pierre in their championship match from UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” in Aug. 2008.

And the competition isn’t getting any easier.

Pierce recently stunned quite a few fans in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 19, registering a convincing unanimous decision over the super tough Brock Larson. It was just the third loss in Larson’s impressive career. And it marked six straight wins for the surging Pierce.

Despite his recent success, Pierce will no doubt be a heavy underdog on fight night when he gets locked inside the cage opposite the 11-fight UFC veteran.

UFC 107 will feature a main event between lightweight division champion, BJ Penn, defending his title against number one division contender, Diego Sanchez. In the co-featured fight of the night, former two-time heavyweight champion Frank Mir will “begin his quest for a third title” when he takes on Cheick Kongo.

Knee injury forces Thiago Alves to withdraw from UFC 107 rematch against Jon Fitch (Updated)

Posted in Jon Fitch, MMA Mania, UFC 107 on October 30th, 2009 by MMA Mania

Former number one welterweight contenders Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch are no longer fighting at UFC 107 after the “Pitbull” was forced to withdraw from the Dec. 12 event with a knee injury, according to MMA Fanhouse.

Fitch was taken off the UFC 106 pay-per-view and inserted into the Memphis show after Ricardo Almeida bowed out of the Nov. 21 event with knee problems of his own.

Like Fitch, Paulo Thiago was also scheduled to throwdown at the FedEx Forum until he was abandoned by Alves, who got the call to replace “Cachorrao” on short notice for the incoming Fitch.

Alves was hoping to avenge his 2006 loss to the Purdue wrestler prior to getting hurt.

From a logistical standpoint, filling the now-vacant slot with Fitch vs. (Paulo) Thiago makes perfect sense; however, they recently met at UFC 100 on July 11, a bout Fitch won in convincing fashion via unanimous decision.

A second fight is likely out of the question.

What plans the promotion has for either of these fighters remains to be seen (Thiago is rumored to be fighting Jacob Volkmann), but the positive side to this is that the 170-pound division is not short on talent.

Keep it locked in to MMAmania.com for more updates on a possible replacement for Alves. In the meantime, you can check out the latest UFC 107 fight card and rumors here.

***Update: MMAmania.com has been able to confirm that Alves will not compete at UFC 107 and that a request will be made to rebook the fight for late January or early February.

UFC 107: Jon Fitch vs Thiago Alves rematch set for Dec. 12

Posted in Jon Fitch, MMA Mania, Thiago Alves, UFC 107, UFC Welterweight Division, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on October 22nd, 2009 by MMA Mania

f-alves

Jon Fitch wasn’t kidding when he mentioned yesterday that a “big” fight was in the works after his opponent for UFC 106, Ricardo Almeida, bowed out of the contest after he sustained a major knee injury while training.

Fitch is currently in discussions to rematch Thiago Alves at UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 12, setting up a fantastic 170-pound showdown that will prove once and for all how far both former number one contenders have come since their initial encounter back in 2006.

Of course, Fitch came away with the win, scoring a convincing second round technical knockout of the Brazilian at UFC Fight Night 5. He would go onto win his next five fights, which earned him a crack at division champion, Georges St. Pierre, at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” in Aug. 2008.

He was overwhelmed by the Canadian for 25 minutes, losing a lopsided unanimous decision.

Alves, too, went on a tear after the loss to Fitch with seven consecutive victories over top-ranked opponents such as Matt Hughes and Karo Parisyan, as well as outpointing Josh Koscheck on all three judges scorecards at UFC 90 in October of 2008.

However, St. Pierre would also end Alves’ run with another five-round clinic at UFC 100 back in July.

“The Pitbull” has not competed since that time (even though he was originally slated to take on Paulo Thiago on this same card — a fight that was apparently scrapped in favor of the Fitch-Alves match up). On the other hand, Fitch exacted revenge against submission specialist Paulo Thiago with a unanimous decision at UFC 100 and notched a similar result against Akihiro Gono earlier this year.

So is Fitch still better than Alves more than three years later or has Alves matured to a point where his last loss is essentially meaningless because he is a totally different fighter?

Tune in on Dec. 12 and find out once and for all. In the meantime, let’s hear what you have to say below.

Ricardo Funch vs Johny Hendricks set for UFC 107 on Dec. 12

Posted in MMA Mania, Ricardo Funch, UFC 107, UFC Welterweight Division, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on October 15th, 2009 by MMA Mania

Undefeated welterweight Ricardo Funch (7-0) will make his Octagon debut against decorated collegiate wrestling All American, Johny Hendricks (6-0), at UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee, on Dec. 12.

And, like most up-and-coming mixed martial artists, making it to the big show is a dream come true.

“I always had the expectation of coming in to the UFC,” he said today to Terra.com.br. “I started to train four years ago and despite training everything, I focused on jiu-jitsu. I tried to become the most complete fighter I could. I have seven victories in seven MMA fights. I beat tough athletes and believed sooner or later the UFC would knock at my door. Thankfully it was sooner! I’m prepared. It’s my dream. It is what I want to do, representing my academy and Brazil.”

Funch’s UFC dream began while watching the legendary Royce Gracie effortlessly dominate the competition in early days of the sport with his unique brand of jiu-jitsu. He began to train locally and his since earned his purple belt while training at Team Link, which is run by former number one heavyweight contender, Gabriel Gonzaga.

Remarkably, he’s been able to do it all in just four years of training.

Funch revealed the opportunity came through Marco Alvan and “Napao” at Team Link — the pair talked to UFC Matchmaker Joe Silva about Funch and provided him with videos to see his talent. Thanks to that, a four-fight contract was signed and he will be part of the welterweight division.

Now the Brazilian fighter is set to debut against a very formidable opponent in Hendricks less than two months from now. Hendricks, a incredibly gifted wrestler, scored a big 30-second win in his promotional debut against The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 winner, Amir Sadollah, at UFC 101 back in August.

For Funch, however, he sees Hendricks as a fighter who is perfectly tailored for his fighting style.

“My adversary has already won several wrestling tournaments,” he said. “He is a tough guy on the mat and has with heavy hands. But this is a fight that fits exactly with my style. He wants to take the fight to the floor and so do I. I believe this match ends up on the ground. I train to finish up! I’m a purple belt and believe in my ground game.”

He certainly does not lack confidence.

UFC 107 official for FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 12

penn-sanchez

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today made the official announcement that it will indeed return to “The Volunteer State” for the second time this year on Dec. 12, 2009.

UFC 107 will feature a main event between lightweight division champion, BJ Penn, defending his title against number one division contender, Diego Sanchez. Company president Dana White, naturally, is excited about the match up … just like most fans.

Here’s a snip:

“In this sport it sometimes takes years for fighters to find the weight class where they’re at their best. I don’t think there’s any question that BJ Penn and Diego Sanchez have finally found their homes at 155 pounds, making the UFC 107 main event a fight between the best Penn and Sanchez we’ve ever seen. BJ hasn’t lost in this weight class in years, and Diego has looked unstoppable in his lightweight fights, and when these two meet in the center of the Octagon, it’s going to make our first trip to Memphis one fight fans will never forget.”

In the co-featured fight of the night, former two-time heavyweight champion Frank Mir will “begin his quest for a third title” when he takes on Cheick Kongo. In addition, the welterweight showdown between former number one contender, Thiago Alves, and fellow Brazilian, Paulo Thiago, was also confirmed.

Of course, several other bouts are also in the works, which you can check out on our developing UFC 107 fight card right here.

Notably absent from the card is former light heavyweight champion, current coach on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 and Memphis native, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. He accepted the role as B.A. Barracus for the upcoming feature film “A-Team,” which caused a serious scheduling conflict and ultimately led to his premature retirement.

His opposing coach and would-be opponent, Rashad Evans, is expected to move on and challenge Thiago Silva instead at UFC 108 on Jan. 2, 2010.
