alt="" /></p> <p>The third time will hopefully be the charm for Jon Fitch (19-3) now that up-and-coming welterweight Mike Pierce (10-1) has agreed to step up and face him at UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 12.</p> <p>Pierce was originally slated to meet Josh Koscheck at UFC Fight Night 20 until “Kos” was promoted to the UFC 106 co-main event opposite Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.</p> <p>Like Pierce, Fitch was left without an opponent when Ricardo Almeida injured his knee and withdrew from their UFC 106 bout on Nov. 21. Zuffa worked a little magic and booked him in a rematch of former number one welterweight contenders opposite Thiago Alves on Dec. 12; however, “Pitbull” also went down with a knee injury and was forced to bow out.</p> <p>Fitch returned to the Octagon at UFC 100 to exact revenge against submission specialist Paulo Thiago, taking the contest via unanimous decision. The Brazilian stunned his good friend and American Kickboxing Academy training partner, Josh Koscheck, with a fight-ending first round uppercut at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson” earlier this year.</p> <p>The Purdue University wrestler now boasts 10 victories for the promotion in 11 attempts. The lone blemish on his record is to welterweight deity Georges “Rush” St. Pierre in their championship match from UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” in Aug. 2008.</p> <p>And the competition isn’t getting any easier.</p> <p><span id="more-18057"></span></p> <p>Pierce recently stunned quite a few fans in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 19, registering a convincing unanimous decision over the super tough Brock Larson. It was just the third loss in Larson’s impressive career. And it marked six straight wins for the surging Pierce.</p> <p>Despite his recent success, Pierce will no doubt be a heavy underdog on fight night when he gets locked inside the cage opposite the 11-fight UFC veteran.</p> <p>UFC 107 will feature a main event between lightweight division champion, BJ Penn, defending his title against number one division contender, Diego Sanchez. promotion’s anticipated Boston debut in mid to late 2010 during the UFC 101 post-fight press conference in the early morning hours of Aug. 9.</p> <p>What started as enthusiastic optimism now seems like a foregone conclusion.</p> <p>A bill to legalize mixed martial arts in Massachusetts recently cleared its latest hurdle in the legislative process after breezing through the State Senate by a vote of 34-1.</p> <p>The bill then headed to the House Ways and Means Committee for additional consideration, where it sailed through by a vote of 144-10. All that remains is a signature from Governor Deval Patrick and it’s go-time.</p> <p>The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) officials stormed Massachusetts earlier this year, attempting to convince lawmakers in the “Bay State” that mixed martial arts regulation is good for them and the state economy … to the tune of $12.3 million in just one weekend.</p> <p>The latest dog and pony show appeared to have done the trick during a State House hearing held back in April. If all goes according to plan, the promotion is hoping to stage a major pay-per-view (PPV) event at some point in 2010.</p> <p>Boston’s TD Banknorth Garden is also under consideration to host the planned event.</p> <p><span id="more-14455"> </span></p> <p><span id="more-17924"></span>Former number one lightweight contender and local-area fighter, Kenny Florian, UFC vice president of regulation and governmental affairs Marc Ratner, as well as general counsels Lawrence Epstein and Michael Mersch, comprised the UFC contingent charged with making the case for regulation.</p> <p>Ratner has previously mentioned that a UFC Fan Expo could also accompany their freshman effort as a way to celebrate the move to Boston as well as reward Northeast fans for their patience.</p> <p>It can’t come soon enough — Florian, Marcus Davis, Jorge Rivera and Gabriel Gonzaga are just a few of the talented fighters who hail from the region and would more than likely be featured on a New England card.</p> <p>And remember that company president Dana White is from “Southie,” which means that he would certainly pull out all the stops to ensure that his homecoming would be unforgettable.</p> <p>The success of UFC 101 in Philadelphia can only help their cause as they continue to plow their way into unregulated markets. Zuffa held it’s first-ever Pennsylvania event just five months after the state sanctioned MMA, indicating the quick turnaround between regulation and a debut show.</p> <p>MMA in Boston — but not New York? It wasn’t the first time the former Brooklyn nurse lost consciousness — he lost his legs on the first episode of the Spike TV reality show last year.</p> <p>He has been medically cleared to fight.</p> <p>And “The Filipino Assassin” is more than likely extremely anxious to prove he still belongs on the UFC roster after his latest episode, as well as a questionable stoppage that led to a first round technical knockout loss to Bradley at UFC 98: “Evans vs. Machida” back in May.</p> <p>It was the second straight loss for “The Next Anderson Silva,” who came up short against a determined Efrain Escudero in the TUF 8 Finale last December.</p> <p>Will he be able to break out of his slump against Emerson?</p> <p><span id="more-17914"></span></p> <p>“The Saint” is looking to bust out of a two-fight skid of his own after most recently dropping a unanimous decision to Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 103: “Franklin vs. Belfort” back in September.</p> <p>Prior to the back-to-back losses Emerson had compiled an impressive six-fight win streak, which included the rare double knockout-tapout “No Contest” against top division contender Gray Maynard in 2007.</p> <p>However, he has been unable to get back in the win column since meeting up with Kurt Pellegrino at UFC Fight Night 17 earlier this year. “Batman” slapped on a fight-ending (rear naked choke) in round two, ending Emerson’s Machida and challenger Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, accounted for nearly 40 percent of the entire payroll with their combined salaries ($355,000).</p> <p>Former number one lightweight contender, Joe Jackson, like a majority of fans, felt that Shogun was the clear-cut winner, which wasn’t the case when the decision was read. He admits that he was actually ashamed with the result while in the company of his “A-Team” castmates, who were more than likely getting their first tastes of what mixed martial arts is all about. Jackson, who prematurely retired from the sport to pursue an acting career, indicates that he won’t return to competition until the UFC hires new, more competent judges.
